Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. August 2020

  • A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning services that included resume development, interviewing techniques, and career guidance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran secured a position as a Program Assistant earning $35,390 per yr.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided guidance for developing a resume, given several job leads, and several career planning services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran accepted a position as a Census Worker earning $43,600 annually.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist developed a career planning program for a service-connected disabled veteran who used those tools to gain a position as a Line Mechanic making $21.00 per hour.
  • The Office of Veteran Employment Services guided a service-connected disabled veteran to develop a federal resume, complete an application for a federal position, and liaised with the local VA medical center to skill market the veteran. The veteran secured a position as a Housekeeping Aide earning $17.00 per hr.
  • A homeless veteran was provided services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received help to revise their resume and apply for positions that met their qualifications online. The veteran accepted a position as a Driver for $49,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services who provided career guidance, job referrals, and employment search assistance techniques. The veteran applied for and was offered a position as a Chef, earning $36,000.00 annually
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was case managed by an Office of Veteran Employment Services team member accepted a position in General Maintenance earning $22,000.00 annually after being provided help with their resume, tips for applying for positions online, and interviewing techniques to enhance their ability to interview for positions.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist that encouraged the veteran to apply for jobs as a Customer Service Representative. After applying for several positions and interviewing for a position that the veteran was significantly interested in, they were hired as Senior Customer Service Representative earning $45,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran with severe barriers to employment found employment as an Account Executive. The veteran started employment on 21 June 2020, earning $63,000.00 per year. The veteran received resume and interview skills assistance from Disabled Veteran Outreach Program and the Local Veteran Employment Representative provided job search assistance, website listings, and job referrals.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided guidance through several career planning methods to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist staff. The veteran secured employment as a Controls Engineer earning $85,000.00 annually using the skills learned by staff.
  • A Transitioning Service Member was referred to several local companies by a Local Veteran Employment Representative for a position with a federal contractor. The veteran interviewed and accepted a position as a Class Design Services Manager at $75,000 a year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided case management services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran developed several resumes and gained interviewing techniques, and job search tips. The veteran was offered and accepted a position as a Contact Tracer earning $43,000.00 annually.
  • A low-income and at risk of being homeless veteran who was laid off due to COVID 19, exhausted all of their funds to where they were unable to pay for basic living expenses and whose vehicle was not operational. The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided career planning services and referred the veteran to a local employer who hired the veteran in a position created for them earning $20.00 an hour. A local veteran service organization agreed to fix the vehicle, so the veteran now has transportation and was provided gas cards to assist in operating their vehicle.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff who accepted an offer as a Customer- Service Representative earning $39,000.00, annually after developing a toolbox of job search skills that led to this position.
  • A low-income veteran found employment as a Delivery Driver earning $32,000.00 annually while being provided numerous career-guidance techniques to gain employment.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Warehouse Worker earning $33,300.00 per year.
  • A homeless veteran was assisted with revising their resume, pursuing job leads, and provided job referrals by the Local Veteran Employment Representative. The veteran accepted a position as a Driver with an annual salary of $50,000.00.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted a homeless veteran who enhance their resume writing skills, developed strategies for finding employment, and was provided a myriad of individualized career services. The veteran accepted a position as Driver with an annual salary of $48,000.00.
  • A recently released incarcerated and homeless veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to develop a resume and job searching methods. The veteran applied for several positions and accepted an offer as a Contract Laborer with a starting salary of $44,800.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran developed a resume, sought job leads, and received case management services with the assistance of a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran gained federal employment as a Transportation Specialist/GS-5 earning $40,000.00 per year.
  • A homeless veteran received services from the Office of Veteran Services and received guidance on resume development. This veteran received numerous job leads and job referrals. The veteran accepted a position as Production Worker for local power products firm making motors with an annual salary of $35,000.00.
  • A veteran at risk of being homeless was provided services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran learned to develop a resume and received numerous job leads and job referrals. The veteran accepted a position as Security officer with an annual salary of $33,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided career planning services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff which led to the veteran securing a position as an Industrial Formulation Technician with a starting annual salary of $40,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and was provided services on resume development and job sourcing. The veteran was offered a position as a Logistics Coordinator with an annual salary of $43,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting was referred to the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff where they received individualized career services to assist them with finding new employment in the accounting field. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff were able to assist the veteran in remaining at their company in a new position as a Financial Accounting Analyst earning $55,000 a year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who has significant disabilities and family commitments needed employment that could accommodate their schedule. The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff were able to assist the veteran in finding suitable employment in a plastics manufacturing setting earning $9.00 an hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran accepted a full time Resource Center Supervisor position at a local High school with a starting wage of $14.03 per hour. A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist worked on resume writing and interview skills for the veteran.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran relocated from Georgia after losing employment as a Lineman. A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist provided a comprehensive assessment and worked with the veteran to develop an individual employment plan and job search strategy. The veteran accepted a part-time Delivery Driver position with a starting wage of $20.30 per hour and with the income being received by the spouse's employment, they have a sustainable living wage now.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist provided a full array of services as well as job search assistance to a service-connected disabled veteran who transferred from another state due to lack of employment. The veteran has accepted a Field Supervisor position with the Census Bureau at $22.00 per hour and will pursue overseas employment in Emergency Management when this position ends.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with resume development, job leads, and job development from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran secured a position as a Field Service Technician earning $17.50 per hr.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Veteran Readiness and Employment /CH 31 program received assistance with numerous career services including resume development, interviewing techniques, job search ideas, and referrals to other veteran resources from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran secured a federal position as an HR Generalist/GS-5 earning $41,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who worked with the veteran on numerous career planning skills. The veteran secured a position as a Warehouse Specialist earning $17.00 per hr.
  • A homeless veteran was provided services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran received guidance on resume development and was provided job leads and other veteran assistance referrals. The veteran accepted a Laborer position with a construction firm earning $33,200.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled and former incarcerated veteran was hired as an Automotive Shop Manager earning $20.00 per hour. The veteran received services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist including referral to Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs, resume development, and job referrals.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist case managed a Vietnam Era veteran beginning in February 2020 when they were laid off from their substitute teaching position. The veteran received a full complement of services and has begun training as an Enumerator for the Bureau of the Census starting at $24.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran at risk of being homeless received assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services to initially address their housing situation. The result led to the veteran finding an apartment and funds for rent and utilities for a period and additional referral to Food Share and other supportive programs. The Local Veteran Employment Representative made additional referrals to employers for sustainable employment which led to a job offer being accepted as a Teacher's Aide with local school district starting this fall at $13.25 per hour.
  • A veteran who was at risk of being homeless was provided services and received help with developing resumes and interviewing tips. The veteran also received numerous job leads and job referrals. The veteran accepted a position as a Laborer with a construction company earning an annual salary of $33,200.00.
