Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. April 2019

  • A low-income veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) staff after experiencing long term unemployment while pursuing a bachelor's degree in Public Health Administration. The OVES team provided career services that assisted in developing a resume, job search techniques, and using the Local Veteran Employment Representative (LVER) to skill market the veteran to local companies. After interviewing with several companies, the veteran secured a position as a Program Managing Coordinator earning $65,000.00 per year beginning in April.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) staff who aided with several career services. The veteran received several interviews and accepted a job offer earning $55,000.00 per year as a Warehouse Supervisor.
  • A low-income veteran worked with a local Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) and was provided career guidance, career planning, job referrals, resume development, and employment search skills. The veteran used those skills to find employment as a Light Truck Mail Deliverer earning $43,680 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was homeless with prior incarceration worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) and received numerous career planning services to mitigate barriers to employment. The veteran was able to navigate through the career planning process with assistance and guidance from the OVES team gaining employment as a Food Production Worker with local food manufacturer starting at $28,000.00 annually. The veteran is keeping a part-time cook position for additional income.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) provided career planning services to a low-income veteran who met poverty income and who was incarcerated under the Work Release Program. The DVOP assisted the veteran with job search tips and guidance, resume development, and referrals to useful resources. Using the tools provided by the DVOP, the veteran gained employment as an Assembler at a local door manufacturing company starting at $12.00 per hour.
  • A veteran in the Chapter 31/ VA Vocational Rehabilitation program was guided through the career planning process and given job search tips and advice, resume development, and job referrals. The veteran gain employment as a Park Ranger with local County Government's Parks and Recreation Department starting at $10.75 per hour.
  • A Chapter 31/Vocational Rehabilitation Program veteran met with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to complete an Individual Employment Plan, a resume, and was provided job searching guidance. The veteran participated in multiple interviews and accepted a Case Manager position earning $41,300.00 annually with full benefits. The veteran will also obtain supervised hourly sign-offs towards formal accreditation(s).
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment staff who provided numerous career planning services to support their employment search effort. The veteran found employment as a Medical Service Coordinator earning $31,000.00 annually.
  • A homeless veteran participated in the Office of Veteran Employment Services Job Club sessions and wrote a successful resume; received job leads and referrals; and improved interviewing skills. The veteran accepted an offer with a hotel as an Environmental Services Attendant earning $30,000.00 annually.
  • The Office of Veteran Employment Services assisted a veteran with a significant barrier employment; providing career planning services such as resume development and job searching skills. The veteran was hired as a full-time Security Guard with a starting wage of $15.00 per hour.
  • A veteran who recently completed the VA Chapter 31/ Vocational Rehabilitation program found employment as a GIS Business Analyst earning $54,000.00 annually. A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist aided this veteran with job development, several job referrals, and developing a resume.
  • A veteran who was a resident in the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program was assisted by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist on how to write a resume, conduct a job search, and enhance their interviewing skills. The veteran used those skills to gain employment as a Butcher at a pay rate of $41,060.00 annually.
  • A Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program veteran resident attended job club activities facilitated by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided job leads and referrals. The veteran received an interview and accepted an offer as a Facilities Maintenance worker with an entry level wage of $41,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment staff who provided career planning services that allowed for the veteran to establish effective methods for applying for positions and interviewing. The veteran used these techniques to gain employment as a 3rd shift Blender Operator earning $19.50 per hour with immediate benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with local Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided the veteran with a comprehensive assessment, career guidance, case management, job referrals, and resume creation. The veteran found employment as a Billing Support Technician earning $15.40 per hour, which is an increase of $5.00 per hour from their previous employment.
  • A low-income veteran accepted a position as a Material Handler earning $15.00 per hour using practices acquired via career planning services provided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services to find employment. The staff provided a wealth of services and guidance to assist the veteran find employment as an Injection Molding Technician earning $13.68 per hour with full benefits.
  • After receiving career services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, a homeless veteran obtained employment as a Staffing Support Specialist earning $13.00 per hour.
  • A veteran who was previously incarcerated, experienced homelessness, and long-term unemployment received career planning services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP). The veteran learned to write an effective resume, was given numerous jobs leads, and meticulously followed the employment plan developed by the DVOP. The veteran accepted a position as a Steamfitter earning $92,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was hired as a Territory Manager earning $35,000.00 per year plus commission after receiving resume development assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
  • A recently separated veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services to develop a resume, received support and guidance for career development and transitioning from the military in general. The veteran accepted an on-the-spot offer as a Sanitation Specialist earning $32,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to develop a resume and was hired as an Environmental Services Specialist (Housekeeping) earning $15.00 per hour full-time with benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled and previously incarcerated veteran received case management services that included job search tips and advice, resume development, interview preparation, job referrals, referrals to useful resources, and ongoing encouragement. As a result, the veteran was able to gain employment as a Material Handler with a starting wage of $13.52 per hour.
  • The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided referral to job boards and resume development services to a disabled serviced-connected veteran who gained employment as a Patient Financial Counselor earning $13.00 hourly. The veteran was pleased with assistance provided and thanked the career planner.
  • A low-income veteran received career planning assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff who provided the veteran with an initial assessment, numerous job referrals, resume development skills, and interviewing practice. The veteran found employment as a Passenger Transportation Driver (Airport) earning $10.00 per hour.
