Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. October 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran who went to school and received a degree in Law Enforcement funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs decided to change career paths. The veteran worked with Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and decided to go for a manufacturing or production position. The veteran applied, interviewed, and was hired as part of the production team at a local manufacturer with a starting wage of $17.20 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume and interview skills development from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran wanted to work at a local Veterans Hospital. With prior experience in food service, the veteran applied, interviewed, and was offered a Food Service Worker position starting at $15.00 per hour at a local veterans' hospital.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff relating to the veteran's prior work and schooling experience in information technology. The veteran applied, interviewed, and was offered an Information Technology position starting at $81,000.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran experiencing homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included resume development and job and employer referrals. The veteran was offered and accepted a Material Handler position with a waste management company starting at $17.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program in the Information Technology field connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for assistance locating career opportunities related to the veteran's degree. Staff provided an initial assessment; case management support; career guidance; job referrals related to the Information Technology field; resume development to emphasize work and education skills and knowledge achieved; and job search and placement services. The veteran applied; interviewed; and was offered and accepted a Software Developer position starting at $52,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referral information highlighting and relevant to the veteran's prior work experience and anticipated career path by Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Delivery Driver position starting at $24.00 per hour.
  • A veteran experiencing homelessness connected with Office of Veteran Employment Services staff for resume and interview skills development. The veteran worked with staff to highlight prior work and education experience in the electrical field. The veteran took advantage of mock interviewing opportunities and after interviewing for a position of interest, the veteran was offered and accepted an Electrical Assembler position starting at $38,760 per year.
  • A job-ready veteran connected with a Local Veteran Employment Representative from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received employer referrals. Staff referred the veteran to an employer who subsequently performed a phone interview followed by an offer for employment which the veteran accepted. The position is in the manufacturing industry and starts at $16.83 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and received an initial assessment followed by case management that included career guidance; job referrals; resume development; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Planning and Zoning Director position starting at $66,000.00 per year based primarily on previous management experience.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received case management support from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff that included an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals relating to the veteran's interests and experience; resume development to emphasize the veteran's prior work and education; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted an Information Technology Specialist position starting at $25.00 per hour.
  • A recently separated and low-income Veteran received resume development and job referral assistance from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff relevant to the Veteran's previous work and training experience. The Veteran was offered and accepted an Unloader position starting at $20.50 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran at risk of homelessness relocated to Wisconsin after unsuccessful employment efforts in several other states. The veteran connected with Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and received resume development to help highlight prior work experience, and job referrals and job development support targeted at matching the veteran with opportunities relating closely with the veteran's knowledge and skills. The veteran was offered and accepted a Union Apprentice Millwright position starting at $24.90 per hour and will receive a Post-911 GI Bill Apprenticeship benefit that will truly help support the veteran's family.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and received resume development to help highlight prior work experience, and job referrals matching the veteran's knowledge and skills. The veteran was offered and accepted a Correctional Officer position starting at $14.89 per hour.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran by providing resume development that highlighted prior work and education experience and job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Correctional Officer position starting at $14.89 per hour.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran by providing resume development that highlighted prior work experience; encouraged the attendance at local hiring events; and provided job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Driver position starting at $24.36 per hour.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran by providing resume development that highlighted prior work and education experience and job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Diesel Mechanic position starting at $27.10 per hour.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran by providing resume development that highlighted prior work and education experience and job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted an Emergency Management Specialist position starting at $55,000.00 per year.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran by providing case management support that included resume development that highlighted prior work and education experience; job search and career guidance; and job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Stocker position starting at $13.00 per hour.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran in danger of homelessness by providing resume and interview skills development that highlighted prior work and education experience and job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Sales Representative position starting at $55,000.00 per year.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a veteran who had been incarcerated by providing resume development that highlighted prior work and education experience and job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Chemical Processor position starting at $18.63 per hour.
  • Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a low-income veteran by providing case management support that included an initial assessment; resume development that highlighted prior work and education experience; career guidance; job referrals directly in line with the veteran's desired career field; and job search and placement information. The Veteran was offered and accepted a Cleaning Associate position starting at $13.50 per hour.
