Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. January 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran received case management support that included job referrals; career guidance; an initial assessment; and job search and placement assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. Utilizing these services to highlight and enhance the Veteran's resume regarding previous work experience, the veteran was offered and accepted a Construction Manager position starting at $65,000.00 per year, a $23,000.00 per year increase over the veteran's last position.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included resume development and job referral assistance. The veteran is nearing graduation from an education program funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs with an Associate's Degree in Small Business Entrepreneurship. The veteran needed income to cover living expenses. Through this collaboration with the Office of Veteran Employment Services, the veteran was offered and accepted a Class B Truck Driver position for a local steel and concrete company starting at $14.00 per hour. The veteran's goal is to open a Self-Help Garage.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran with deteriorating health conditions connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referral assistance. After applying for some of these job leads, the veteran interviewed and was offered an Account Manager position starting at $13.79 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included resume development and job referral assistance relating to the veteran's previous employment and education experience. WiscJobs for Vets program staff provided employer and job referrals to the veteran regarding a State Agency Revenue Agent position. The veteran interviewed for, was offered, and accepted the position with a starting wage of $19.50 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referral support focusing on previous work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted an Assembler position starting at $14.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referral assistance focusing on the veteran's work history. The veteran was offered and accepted employment with an engineering and manufacturing employer starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A veteran transitioning from service relocated to Wisconsin and connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran possessed a wealth of management experience from many years of serving our Country. Highlighting the veteran's management experience, a job offer was made and accepted for a Workforce Manager position starting at $63,000.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included a comprehensive assessment; an individual employment plan; resume and interview skills development; career guidance; and job referral assistance. Utilizing these services to compliment the veteran's work experience resulted in the veteran receiving and accepting an offer of employment for a Facilities Maintenance position starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran utilized these services to highlight previous experience and enhance a resume that led to the veteran being offered and accepting a Milling Machine Operator position starting at $14.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled and low-income veteran reached out to the Office of Veteran Employment services due to a job termination and being the financial support for a family of five (5). Staff connected with agency partners such as the County Veteran Service Office for support assistance. The County Veteran Service Office aided with rent; food; gas; and utility expenses. The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided additional assistance in the form of case management support that included resume development to highlight prior work experience and the veteran's Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality and Management; an individual employment plan; the veteran completed an ONET Interest Profiler session; and job referral assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted an Industrial Sanitation Management Trainee position that was job developed with collaboration between the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and an employer with a starting wage of $44,000.00 per year.
  • A veteran who had been incarcerated connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services after losing employment due to illness. Staff assisted the veteran with resume development and job referrals. Highlighting previous work experience led the veteran to being offered and accepting a position with a software company with a starting wage of $16.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received assistance and support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services that included labor market information; resume, interview, and job development; and job referrals. The veteran received 3 job interviews and accepted a Cleaning Supervisor for night cleaning crew with starting pay of $32,000.00 per year based on previous experience.
  • A low-income veteran was offered and accepted a Sexual Risk Avoidance Educator position starting at $45,000.00 per year. The veteran received resume development and job referral assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services that helped to highlight previous work and education experience.
  • A veteran who had experienced homelessness was offered and accepted a Warehousing Specialist position starting at $32,000.00 per year. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services who provided resume and interview skills development to highlight work experience as well as effectively communicate skills and experience during interviews; online career exploration; and collaboration with the Center for Veterans Issues who helped the veteran overcome homelessness.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received assistance with resume development and job referrals. Highlighting the veteran's experience and utilizing the Local Veteran Employment Representative helped lead to an offer and the acceptance of an Advance Medical Support Assistant position starting at $45.000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was not eligible for the WiscJobs for Vets program for non-competitive hire eligibility for State jobs reached out to the Office of Veteran Employment Services for assistance gaining interviews with State Agencies with the goal of finding a full-time permanent position. After receiving services such as resume development highlighting previous work experience; job and employer referrals; and utilizing staff networking relationships, the veteran was offered and accepted a full-time and permanent Financial Specialist-Senior position with a State Agency starting at $18.03 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for assistance with the non-competitive WiscJobs for Vets program eligibility for State jobs. After receiving resume development to highlight previous experience and job and employer referrals the veteran was offered and accepted an Enterprise Records Officer position starting at $30.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who is participating in a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support. Support included resume development; an individual employment plan; a comprehensive assessment; and job referral assistance. Helping the veteran to focus and to highlight previous work and education experience resulted in the veteran being offered and accepting a Customer Service Representative position starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who is participating in a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support. Support included resume development; career guidance; an initial assessment; and job referral assistance. Helping the veteran to focus and to highlight previous work and education experience resulted in the veteran being offered and accepting a Medical Program Assistant position starting at $14.25 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received online job search support; resume development emphasizing previous work experience; and job referral assistance after connecting with the Office of Veteran Employment Services subsequently resulting in the veteran receiving and accepting an employment offer for a Forklift Operator position starting at $15.75 per hour.
