Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. May 2019

• A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services to gain the skills needed to write an effective resume and apply for positions that met their employment competencies. The veteran gained employment as an Administrative Assistant earning $38,500.00 annually.
• The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided career planning assistance to a low-income veteran who had been dislocated due to a company closure. The veteran received resume writing tips, job searching ideas, and practiced interviewing. The veteran interviewed with several companies and accepted a position as a Customer Service Representative with a starting wage of $34,300.00 annually.
• A low-income veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who assisted the veteran to find employment as a Scuffer earning $25,000.00 annually. The veteran received the following career planning services: initial assessment, career guidance, case management, job referrals, resume creation, employment search, and placement.
• A veteran who was previously incarcerated was provided additional assistance with resume development, job coaching, and recommendations to enhance their interview skills. The veteran received an interview and a job offer as a Groundskeeper earning $22,880.00 per year.
• A low-income veteran at risk of homelessness received assistance in job searches, referral to job boards, and resume modification from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, which led to gaining employment as a UX interaction designer. The veterans' wage is $90,000.00 per year and they will be able to work remotely.
• A homeless veteran received support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff with mock interviewing, job leads, and support from partnering agencies for mitigating homelessness. The veteran secured employment as District Code Enforcement Supervisor at a pay rate of $66,500.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning services and job searching skills from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran used those skills to apply for several positions before accepting an offer as a Procurement Section Chief at a wage of $62,000.00 annually.
• A Chapter 31/ Vocational Rehabilitation Program veteran participant worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to find employment as a Surgical Technologist earning $43,000.00 annually. The veteran was provided with a comprehensive assessment, career guidance, job referrals, and resume creation.
• A veteran at risk of homelessness has obtained employment as a Merchandizer earning $38,000.00 yearly after obtaining support and assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP). The DVOP provided referrals to employers and job boards to secure a job, while help from partner agencies assisted in securing stable housing.
• A low-income veteran received career planning services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist that assisted in attaining full time employment as a Laboratory Technician earning $37,400.00 annually.
• The Office of Veteran Employment staff provided a service-connected disabled veteran with job leads, a comprehensive assessment, referral to VA programs, and other non-WIOA programs. The veteran used those skills to gain employment as a Teacher's Assistant earning $17.00 per hour.
• A low-income veteran was able to secure a part-time After-Hours Telephone Triage Nurse position earning $28.00 per hour, while pursuing a Graduate Degree. The veteran found employment with the assistance of the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
• The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff worked with a Vietnam Era, service-connected disabled veteran who found employment as a Dump Truck Driver starting at $16.00 per hour with anticipated increases in pay based on performance. The veteran received help developing a resume, job searches, and a referral to their prospective employer who offered the position.
• A low-income veteran lacking a high school diploma found two full-time positions as a Housekeeper with starting pay at $11.50 per hour and as a Bartender /Server with starting pay at $9.50 hour plus tips.
• A service-connected disabled veteran notified the Office of Veteran Employment Services they found employment as a Business Developer after receiving assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran will be earning $50,000 per year plus benefits.
• A previously incarcerated veteran worked with Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist staff and found employment as a Cost Accountant earning $50,000.00 per year after receiving career guidance, case management, job referrals, resume creation, employment search, and placement.
• A low-income veteran was provided additional support writing a resume and received coaching on the interviewing process. The veteran received several interviews and a job offer earning $41,600.00 per year as a Brake Press Operator.
• Vietnam-Era veteran received assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services who provided resume development and job leads. Veteran secured a position as an Insurance Agent with a salary of $40,000.00 plus commission.
• A homeless veteran learned to write an effective resume and applied for positions in warehouses with assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran accepted a position as a Warehouse Worker and began work on April 29, 2019 earning $30,000.00 annually.
• A veteran enrolled in the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program received career services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff on resume development and interviewing. The veteran accepted employment as a Warehouse Worker at a wage of $30,00.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development, labor market information, job searching, and case management from a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist, which lead to gaining employment as a Publishing and Distribution Shift Supervisor. The veteran's wage is $24.00 per hour.
• A veteran at risk of becoming homeless was skill-marketed to companies after being provided services for career exploration by the Office of Veteran Employment staff. The veteran obtained a position as Warehouse Operations Manager earning $45,000.00 per year.
• A low-income veteran received support and career planning services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was able to gain a position as a Driver earning $31, 200.00 per year due to the assistance from the staff.
• A veteran between the ages of 18 and 24 worked with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Bank Teller earning $24,960.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received guidance and recommendations for employment that lead to securing a position as a CNC Machinist earning $27.00 per hour with full benefits. The veteran's employment began on 06 May 2019.
• A previously homeless and service-connected disabled veteran received guidance in developing a resume, searching for positions using online applications, and other career services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services team. The veteran used these skills to obtain a position as a full time Security Specialist earning $18.00 per hour.
• A transitioning service member worked with a local Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist staff member to find employment as a Field and Facility Maintenance Technician, earning $16.00 per hour after receiving the following services: career guidance, case management, resume development, and employment search and placement.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received information and assistance to apply for federal and state employment positions. The Office of Veteran Employment Services helped develop a resume and an employment plan, which led to employment as a Field Representative at a wage of $14.30 per hour.
• A low-income veteran was recalled by their last employer after five years of employment as a Security Officer. The veteran was given a raise to $10.00 per hour and assured that they were earmarked for a promotion to a supervisory position at the end of the 90-day probation period with a subsequent pay raise upon completing supervisor's training.
• A low-income veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided numerous career planning services. The veteran used the skills received to apply for and obtain a job offer as a Freight Operations Supervisor earning $64,000.00 annually.
• A veteran who has overcome homelessness with assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and the Center for Veteran Issues by attending several workshops on writing resumes, conducting online job searches and applications, and participating in mock interviews. The veteran accepted employment as a Building Engineer earning $56,000.00 annually.
• A formerly incarcerated veteran successfully completed the Pipeline to Employment Program and received support and career planning services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran secured a position as a Welder, earning $29,120.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who is participating in the Vocational Rehabilitation program/Chapter 31 and is receiving employment search skills from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist interviewed for a Conservation/GIS Tech position was offered a position. The veteran began employment on 6/3/19 earning $18.00 per hour.
• After receiving a full complement of career services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services team, a service-connected disabled veteran was hired as a Forklift operator in a full-time permanent position earning $16.00 per hour with benefits and the opportunity for overtime hours.
