Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. February 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included career guidance; resume development that highlighted the Veteran's prior work experience; job referrals relating to previous experience; and other job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Maintenance Technician position starting at $18.09 per hour.
  • A veteran at risk of homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services after being terminated from previous employment. Staff provided a case management support model to the veteran that included unemployment benefit information; online job search assistance; job referrals; referrals to support organizations; and resume development to focus on and highlight previous work and education experience. By utilizing these services and working with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, the veteran was offered and accepted a Behavior Therapist position starting at $50,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Production position starting at $15.00 per hour. The Veteran received resume development and job referral assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services to focus the veteran's job search efforts and to better emphasize prior work experience.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who possessed extensive experience in computer numerical controls (CNC) connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services requesting employment assistance. The veteran received resume and job development assistance; job referrals; and career guidance. These services contributed to the veteran receiving and accepting a CNC Programming Lead position starting at $30.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received and accepted a Diesel Repair Technician position starting at $21.50 per hour. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume and job development; job referrals; and career guidance helping the veteran to focus employment efforts and connect with relevant opportunities.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services after learning of an organizational restructure causing employment termination. The veteran was a Senior Electro-Mechanical Technician earning $30.00 per hour. The veteran received resume development services and job referrals that highlighted and were relevant to the veteran's experience. The Veteran was offered and accepted Production Supervisor position starting at $63,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Production Worker position starting at $15.35 per hour. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and was referred to partner support agencies for housing assistance. Additionally, the veteran also participated in the Veteran in Piping program, but decided not to complete the program. The veteran was accepted into a vocational rehabilitation and employment program for an information technology degree but upon graduation, the veteran determined this field was not a good fit. The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume development, career guidance, and job referral services leading the veteran to the Production Worker position.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referral assistance. Focusing on prior work experience during resume development contributed to the veteran receiving an offer and acceptance of a Jewelry Sales Representative starting at $19.70 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services needing employment quickly and specifically interested in working for a local hospital. After receiving resume development, job referrals, and a direct employer referral, the veteran was offered and accepted a Housekeep position starting at $14.50 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received and accepted a Gas Inspector position starting at $24.92 per hour; the offer of employment was due to prior work experience. The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided resume development; job referrals; and job development assistance.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Maintenance Technician position starting at $55,000.00 per year. The offer of employment was made based on the veteran's prior work experience that was emphasized during resume and job development services provided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services.
  • A service-connected disabled Veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services needing employment quickly and specifically interested in working for a local hospital. After receiving resume development, job referrals, and a direct employer referral, the veteran was offered and accepted a Housekeep position starting at $14.50 per hour.
  • A 60% service-connected disabled veteran and father of two young children received and accepted a position as a US Postal Carrier starting at $20.61 per hour with full benefits. The veteran recently lost employment due to company right-sizing. The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided case management with resume development; created an individualized employment plan; and job development assistance.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a CNC Operator position starting at $16.00 per hour. The offer of employment was made based on the veteran's prior work experience that was emphasized during resume and job development and job lead services provided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services.
  • A recently separated veteran was offered and accepted a Logistician position starting at $80,000 per year. The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided resume development; Federal Resume Development; and job development assistance.
  • A 50% service-connected disabled Veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referral assistance to a variety of local City and County Police Officer positions. The veteran applied, interviewed and accepted a position with The Department of Corrections starting at $16.76 per hour plus state benefits. The veteran is hoping this will lead him to a supervisory position.
  • A low income and service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Core Mold Maker position starting at $19.75 per hour with full benefits and union retirement. The veteran desired a career change from an office position to a manufacturing position. The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided case management with resume and job development; an individualized employment plan; and job lead services.
  • A 80% service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Park Technician position with a local city starting at $16.73 per hour with full benefits after 60 days. The offer of employment was made based on the veteran's degree in Natural Resources Management through Chapter 31 and prior work experience that was emphasized during resume and job development; and job lead services provided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services.
  • A homeless veteran was seeking employment to supplement his social security benefit. The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided resume development; job leads; and computer assistance. The veteran accepted a full-time State of Wisconsin position as a Cook starting at $13.65 per hour and full benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled and Chapter 31 veteran accepted a position as a full-time Engineer Structural Technician starting at $17.50. This wage is an increase of $5.50 from previous employment. The Office of Veteran Employment Services provided case management with career guidance; job referrals; and job search and placement.
