DWD Awarded $1.3M in Grant Funding for Apprenticeship from U.S. DOL

MADISON – The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to further apprenticeship efforts in Wisconsin this week.

As part of a nationwide effort expanding apprenticeship in America, the U.S. DOL announced $73 million in grant funding to increase the number of apprentices across all industries. Wisconsin's DWD will receive $1.3 million in grant funding.

Governor Tony Evers is committed to comprehensive workforce development that supports every Wisconsinite's ability to participate in the labor force. The opportunity of apprenticeship is part of a multi-faceted workforce strategy that Gov. Evers is proud to champion.

This grant funding further accelerates efforts into the inclusion of veterans, military spouses, women, people of color and ex-offenders into the apprenticeship program, providing an investment in people that often have barriers to gainful employment.

"The benefit of apprenticeship in Wisconsin is two-fold," DWD Secretary Caleb Frostman said. "It is a reliable vehicle for Wisconsin's citizens to find work in fields with family-supporting wages and it's also an effective strategy for companies to solve skill gaps. We're proud to continue this work in our great state."

Wisconsin is home to the nation's oldest apprenticeship program, founded in 1911. Currently Wisconsin Apprenticeship serves more than 13,000 registered apprenticeships across a growing number of industries from construction to finance to farming.
