Department of Workforce Development to Provide Technical Assistance to Governor's Caregiving Task Force

MADISON – Governor Tony Evers has signed Executive Order #11 establishing the Governor's Task Force on Caregiving in Wisconsin.

Direct care workforce is facing a critical shortage that is negatively impacting the ability of Wisconsin families to obtain the care they need. A significant number of caregiving positions go unfilled, leaving vulnerable populations with less access to critical services. It has become a top issue for Governor Evers to retain and recruit certified nursing assistants (CNA) and other caregivers since many workers are opting out of the caregiving profession or going to border states where higher-paying jobs are offered.

"Caregivers provide critically important services and are often the unsung heroes, supporting and caring for friends and loved ones so they can stay in their homes and their communities," said Gov. Evers. "It's important to me that we recognize, value, and celebrate the work of caregivers across our state, and that we make sure caregivers have the support they need while strengthening and improving access to the direct care workforce in Wisconsin."

The Governor's Task Force on Caregiving will be staffed by the Department of Health Services with technical assistance provided by the Department of Workforce Development. Technical assistance will include: (1) analyzing strategies to attract and retain a strong direct care workforce, (2) assisting with program development to implement, recruit, retain and expand the pool of caregiving providers and (3) exploring and developing solutions, in collaboration with relevant departments and agencies, to support and strengthen the direct care workforce.

"We are excited to provide any help Governor Evers may need on this task force," said Secretary-designee Caleb Frostman. "This task force will recognize and celebrate caregivers for the services they provide to some of Wisconsin’s most vulnerable populations."
