MADISON – Efforts to modernize and improve services for customers helped to drive a major upgrade to the online system used by hundreds of worker's compensation insurance carriers, employers, and claims adjusters to submit required work-related injury data to the Wisconsin Worker's Compensation (WC) Division.
The project was led by WC Claims Management Section Chief Rodney Gennrich, Bureau of Claims Management Director Tracy Aiello, Information Systems Business Automation Consultant/Administrator Debra Morhoff, Information Systems Business Automation Specialist Laura Przybylo, and many WC subject matter experts, in addition to staff from the Administrative Services Division's Bureau of Informational Systems Technology.
In Wisconsin, insurance carriers and self-insured employers are required by law to submit injury claim reports to the WC Division. For more than two decades, many of these reports were submitted electronically through the pending reports internet application. The system was state of the art when it launched in 2001, but it needed upgrades to meet changing internet security needs and integrate the new security updates being made across government platforms.
The modernized portal, which was rolled out to users starting in March 2025 and completed in late August, consists of several enhancements including:
"The new website will make it easier for our external stakeholders to provide us with the required claim updates and improve communication with the division,” Gennrich said. "We’re grateful to our customers who participated in the modernization process and want to extend a special thank you to Sentry Insurance, Sedgwick Claims Management, and Acuity Insurance for being our external testers."
"Our external testers invested time and dedication helping us not only develop the new version of the pending report while it was in acceptance testing, but also real-time troubleshoot the new version of the portal while a select few of their adjusters were using it in production," Aiello said. "Without a doubt their expertise, knowledge, experience, and willingness to assist us (on top of all of their other job duties) made the new version a better product."
In addition, Przybylo came up with the idea to survey users after a biannual insurer training that the WC Division organized and conducted. The results were incorporated into the improvements to the portal.
Approximately 1,200 insurers, employers, and other registered users access the portal regularly. Most Wisconsin employers are legally required to have worker's compensation insurance policies, and the upgrades to the worker’s compensation injury claim system will make it easier for all users to submit claims and access information, and for injured workers to receive the benefits they’re due.
