Hello everyone, and welcome back to Safety Corner, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Division of Worker's Compensation (DWD/WC) safety blog! I'm using this forum to share some of the current, pertinent safety news and information that I receive from my network of workplace safety professionals and pass along to employers across Wisconsin.
From our safety partners at the National Safety Council (NSC), check out the NSC's community/family safety offerings as we approach the busy, festive holiday season. Topics of seasonal interest include:
Electrical systems during the holidays are often taxed to their maximum. Several online resources highlight ways to avoid common electrical hazards and prevent electrical shocks and fires:
A warm, cozy fireplace is a great place to gather with family and friends and enjoy the illuminated, decorated tree and holiday decorations during the holidays. Don't let your holiday scene chase you from your home due to fire. Learn more at:
Wood-burning fireplace and stove ash can remain fire-capable and active for days, and up to a week in some cases, contributing to fires due to improper storage and disposal. Never use combustible paper bags nor cardboard containers/boxes to store ashes in the garage, porch, lean to, etc. prior to final disposal.
Always dispose of ash in a purpose-built UL/FM-approved double bottom steel ash bucket/container with tight-fitting lid. Always store outside clear of buildings, structures, and combustibles until they can be safely disposed of. Learn more at:
As a look ahead, a reminder that we will be moving into the post-holiday season and into the heart of the frigid days of our Wisconsin winter months. More to follow as we enter January / the New Year and Wisconsin's winter months.
Have a Safe, Happy Holidays, Always!!
