What to do if you were out of work due to one of the three new COVID-qualifying reasons:

Did you previously apply for PUA and regular UI for the weeks you were unemployed and got denied PUA because you didn't have a COVID-19 qualifying reason for filing?

If yes, and if you filed the application before 12/27/2020 then the Department will notify you by letter of your option to request a redetermination of your eligibility. PUA can be claimed going back to when your employment was first affected by the pandemic. Return the form enclosed with your letter by uploading it to your claims portal or by fax or mail.

If yes, and you filed your application after 12/27/20, but you applied for unemployment before 12/27/20 and you were denied regular benefits, the department will notify you by letter of your option to request a redetermination of your eligibility. PUA can be backdated to the week your regular unemployment claim was effective. Return the form enclosed with your letter by uploading it to your claims portal, or by fax or mail.

If yes, and you filed your application after 12/27/20, and you didn't apply for regular unemployment by 12/27/20 and get denied, the department will notify you by letter of your option to request a redetermination of your eligibility. PUA can only be backdated to 12/6/20. Return the form enclosed with your letter by uploading it to your claims portal, or by fax or mail.

If no because you didn't previously apply for PUA, but you did apply for regular UI and got denied, use the link in your portal to apply for PUA. If your unemployment claim was filed by 12/27/20, PUA claim can be backdated to the week your unemployment claim was effective.

If no because you didn't apply for regular UI at all, apply for regular unemployent going back to the first week you were out of work and return the form enclosed with your letter by uploading it to your claims portal, or by fax or mail. If approved, you will collect state UI benefits for all eligible weeks. If denied unemployment but you previously filed for PUA by 12/27/20, PUA can be claimed going back to when your employment was first affected by the pandemic. If denied UI and your first PUA application was filed after 12/27/20, your PUA claim can only be backdated to 12/6/20.

APPEALS:
If you are unemployed due to one of the three new COVID-19 qualifying reasons but have an appeal pending, the same instructions apply. However, your new claim may not be processed until the appeal is resolved.
