DWD Visits Local Manufacturer in Green Bay WI to Highlight Youth Apprenticeship as part of Manufacturing Month

Governor Walker proclaimed October as Manufacturing Month throughout Wisconsin

GREEN BAY – Yesterday, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Assistant Deputy Secretary Dave Anderson visited Northeast Wisconsin to celebrate Wisconsin Manufacturing Month by touring KI of Green Bay, which takes part in the state's Youth Apprenticeship (YA) program. Governor Walker proclaimed October as Manufacturing Month to highlight the high-quality, family-supporting jobs available in the manufacturing industry.

"The Youth Apprenticeship program provides high school students with hands-on experience in a variety of industries including manufacturing," Assistant Deputy Secretary Anderson said. "With more than 465,000 employees in manufacturing jobs across the state, this industry sector is the backbone of our state's economy. That is why it is vital to get our future workforce trained with in-demand skills and to connect them with businesses that are looking to hire talent."

On the tour, Assistant Deputy Secretary Anderson met with company executives at KI as well as students taking part in the GPS Education Partners Advanced YA program. Youth Apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training that enables a student to graduate high school with the skills needed for an entry-level job in manufacturing. Under Governor Walker, Wisconsin has made significant investments in Wisconsin’s YA program, which had 636 students enrolled in manufacturing-related programs in the 2015-16 school year.

KI is one of 10 GPS Education Centers. GPS Education Partners is an education solutions organization, founded in 2000, and the only manufacturing-specific, statewide Youth Apprenticeship Program in Wisconsin.

GPS Education Partners offer an innovative solution to effectively address the needs of the future workforce. Through a customized learning management system, they meet the needs of businesses while providing students with pathways to in-demand careers.

"The core of the new GPS Credentialed Work-Based Learning program is preparing young people for success with a solid education, a career plan with purpose and employability skills for life,” said Stephanie Borowski, President and CEO. "Today 100% of our graduates earn industry-recognized certificates and 80% who pursue advanced manufacturing careers are hired by companies at which they were trained."
