Governor Walker Highlights $38 Million Reduction in Unemployment Insurance Tax for Wisconsin Companies

With $97 million reduction for tax year 2016, two-year savings total $135 million

Gilman – Governor Scott Walker joined company leaders and employees this afternoon at Gilman Cheese Corporation for a tour and to discuss the tax savings for Wisconsin employers as a direct result of the stable Unemployment Insurance (UI) fund.

Employers covered under the UI program will experience an estimated $38 million reduction in their UI taxes for the year 2017, which marks the second consecutive tax year that employer UI taxes will decline. When combined with the $97 million reduction for tax year 2016, employers will see an estimated reduction of $135 million.

Gilman Cheese Corporation continues to be an important part of the Gilman community since its founding in 1948. The factory has grown to over 40,000 square feet and more than 120 employees and features an extensive packaging and cheese smoking operation which produces approximately 100,000 pounds of processed cheese every day.

“Gilman Cheese is a great example of a company dedicated to delivering quality Wisconsin-made products and being a great asset for the community and the state,” said Governor Walker. “We need to ensure they continue to have access to skilled workers. By reducing the unemployment insurance tax burden, the company can focus on retaining their current employees and attracting new workers.”

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is constantly working to develop Wisconsin’s workers and connect job seekers to employers throughout the state. Part of that effort includes ensuring the UI program remains strong and available to workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own. Wisconsin’s UI Trust Fund is the healthiest it’s been since 2003 which benefits employers and workers alike.
