DWD Secretary Allen Highlights Talent Development Opportunities for Fox Cities Employers

Dozens of employers joined DWD Secretary Allen to discuss workforce training initiatives in the Fox Valley

APPLETON – Today, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen met with more than 40 Northeast Wisconsin employers at Fox Valley Technical College and emphasized that state and regional workforce partners are ready to help them meet their need for skilled workers.

"With unemployment reaching a 15-year low and the number of employed Wisconsinites reaching a record high 2016, Wisconsin's economy is growing under Governor Walker's leadership," Secretary Allen said. "In order to keep our state's economy strong, employers in the Fox Cities and throughout the state need enough skilled workers to fill available openings. Events like today's roundtable allow DWD to listen to the needs of employers and use that feedback to pursue innovations that develop the workforce and ensure a robust talent pool.”

Ten-year projections show that the state has nearly 1 million jobs to fill from 2012-22, with over three quarters of the positions becoming available due to retirements. Currently, tens of thousands of job openings are posted on JobCenterofWisconsin.com, Wisconsin's public labor exchange available to employers and job seekers at no cost, 24 hours a day.

During today's meeting hosted by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce, Secretary Allen highlighted DWD's portfolio of talent development programs delivered by the agency as well as those available through regional workforce partners. Such programs include Wisconsin Fast Forward, Registered and Youth Apprenticeship, and DWD's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
