Governor Scott Walker Invests Over $450,000 to Support Summer Youth Employment Program in Milwaukee

Madison – Governor Scott Walker and Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen today announced an investment of over $450,000 in funds to support the 2016 Summer Youth Employment program in Milwaukee.

"To ensure Wisconsin’s continued economic success in the future, it’s crucial to invest in developing our workforce today," Governor Walker said. "Opportunities like the Summer Youth Employment Program in Milwaukee are important talent development strategies which help prepare our students for employment success in the future. We’re excited to invest in programs like these, which ultimately accelerate the path to a good-paying, in-demand career by providing Wisconsin youth with hands-on experience and training."

Governor Walker directed DWD to award general purpose revenue funds to Employ Milwaukee and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee to jointly administer the local program to provide Milwaukee County youth and young adults with paid summer work placements in the Milwaukee area. Locations include private-sector employers and community-based organizations.

"Governor Walker's Summer Youth Employment Program invests in Milwaukee youth to help them develop vital job skills that employers are looking for," Secretary Allen said. "Due to the successful partnerships between employers, local and state government, as well as our regional workforce partner Employ Milwaukee, this program has been and will continue to be a successful method to further develop talent in our Wisconsin workforce."

Participating youth complete a week of work-readiness training that includes an individualized assessment, soft skills development, resume writing, interviewing skills, job coaching, and financial literacy. Those who successfully finish their work experience are prepared for their return to school or for entry-level employment.
