Secretary Newson Joins Students in Racine for National Manufacturing Day

Governor Walker proclaimed October as Manufacturing Month; Oct 3 is National Manufacturing Day

RACINE – In celebration of National Manufacturing Day, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Reggie Newson joined middle school students at Badger Meter in Racine for a tour of its manufacturing operation.

"Today, and throughout the month, manufacturers across Wisconsin are opening their doors to students to showcase the positive impact manufacturing has on our economy and the rewarding careers it has to offer," said Secretary Reggie Newson. "Students, their parents, their teachers, the public in general, all can benefit from a better understanding and greater appreciation of this vital sector and the high-tech, challenging careers available, jobs with good pay and benefits to support a family."

The average pay for a manufacturing worker in Wisconsin is $53,000 per year, more than $10,000 per year higher than the average pay for all Wisconsin private-sector workers. Over 16 percent of Wisconsin's jobs are directly employed in manufacturing, outpacing the national average of 9 percent. In addition, manufacturing contributes more than $53 billion to Wisconsin’s economic output.

During Manufacturing Month, Wisconsin manufacturing businesses, technical colleges, and other partners are encouraged to open their doors for tours, open houses and other events designed to show the great career opportunities that are available to individuals in manufacturing.

The 2014 Manufacturing Month celebration is designed to raise awareness of different career pathways that are available to students in the manufacturing industry, including IT, purchasing, accounting, finance, human resources and engineering.

Activities during 2014 Manufacturing Month include:
