Tool & Die Apprenticeship
Western Technical College
Tool and die makers analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make the repair dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures (devices that hold metal while it is shaped, stamped or drilled), gauges, and machinist s hand tools. Die makers construct metal forms (dies) to shape metal in stamping and forging operations. A tool and die maker operates various machine tools to make and repair molds, special machinery, tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and die cast dies. In this apprenticeship, learn basic theory in machining, blueprint reading and metallurgy, in addition to knowledge in stamping, mold making blanking, jigs and fixtures, plastics and die casting. Computer-assisted CNC machining and die mold design are also covered. Show More

Talk to employers whose businesses involve your chosen trade and find out if the employer trains apprentices. Those interested in the construction trades should apply to the local Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC), a volunteer committee in the construction industry that shares information about the specific trade. For apprenticeship in manufacturing and service industries, contact the employer directly to find out their procedure for choosing apprenticeship candidates.

PLEASE NOTE:

If there are fewer than eight enrollments in the training program, only the "Enrollments" number will be displayed; all other data is hidden in order to help protect the students' identities. The "Employment Outcomes" are calculated using information from Wisconsin's Unemployment Insurance Wage database. Most employers are required to report certain employment information to the State of Wisconsin, including quarterly wage information for their employees. Students whose information could not be verified in this database are excluded from these outcomes. If a "0" shows for any of these outcomes, it means that none of the students' information could be verified.

MAKING SENSE OF THE EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES:

"Average quarterly wages" means the total wages earned in a three-month period by all students who completed the program ("completers"), divided by the total number of completers.

"Median quarterly wages" means all the completers' quarterly wages are placed in order from lowest to highest and then we identify the student's wages in the middle. This information is provided because averages can be greatly influenced by really high and low wage earners.

To estimate monthly wages, divide the quarterly wages by three.
