Absolute Advantage Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training
Community Relations - Social Development Commission
08/08/2016
Absolute Advantage is a pre-apprenticeship course for those seeking an occupation in construction. The course is ten weeks in length and uses the ""Core Curriculum: Introductory Craft Skills"" from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). The NCCER model covers math, safety, hand and power tool use, blueprints, and rigging. The course provides additional certification and experience. Participants gain OSHA 30, Asbestos Abatement Worker and Lead Abatement Worker Certification and contribute to rehabilitating homes in the City of Milwaukee. Participants are enrolled in the City of Milwaukee residential preference program. Those completing the course have a good understanding of the skilled trades' apprenticeship recruitment and process. This program is offered

Absolute Advantage recruits three times per calendar year for three cohorts (January, May, September). There is no firm application deadline, but most applications are received and are in process of review two weeks prior to the start of a cohort.
Absolute Advantage can lead construction work experience, an apprenticeship in a skilled trade, and continuing education through Joint Apprenticeship Training Committees (JATC), Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), or Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC).
The Social Development Commission (SDC) has relationships with area companies through our collaboration with local employers and partnerships. The SDC Weatherization program is also a source of business cooperation through contractors and subcontractors performing energy efficiency related work on area homes.
SDC maintains dedicated staff in job development. The Employment Specialist role is to be aware of current employment opportunities and cultivate working relationship with employers.
Clients who visit our agency to complete assessments and have been determined as needing tutoring are referred to community based organizations specializing in adult education or special needs.

PLEASE NOTE:

If there are fewer than eight enrollments in the training program, only the "Enrollments" number will be displayed; all other data is hidden in order to help protect the students' identities. The "Employment Outcomes" are calculated using information from Wisconsin's Unemployment Insurance Wage database. Most employers are required to report certain employment information to the State of Wisconsin, including quarterly wage information for their employees. Students whose information could not be verified in this database are excluded from these outcomes. If a "0" shows for any of these outcomes, it means that none of the students' information could be verified.

MAKING SENSE OF THE EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES:

"Average quarterly wages" means the total wages earned in a three-month period by all students who completed the program ("completers"), divided by the total number of completers.

"Median quarterly wages" means all the completers' quarterly wages are placed in order from lowest to highest and then we identify the student's wages in the middle. This information is provided because averages can be greatly influenced by really high and low wage earners.

To estimate monthly wages, divide the quarterly wages by three.
