Student Career Planning Calendar
What should I do if I am interested in the YA program?
Suggested activities and timeframes for students interested in participating in a YA program
Ninth Grade:
- Participate in career exploration activities
- Research career information
- Attend parent/student information meetings regarding to school-to-work options such as Youth Apprenticeship
- Review school-to work materials and Career Cluster Programs of Study
- Meet with guidance counselor to develop or review your four-year plan to include a school-to-work option such as Youth Apprenticeship
- Stay on target to graduate Maintain a passing Grade Point Average (GPA)
Tenth Grade:
- Participate in career fairs, job shadowing, and other career exploration activities
- Attend parent/student information meetings regarding school-to-work options such as Youth Apprenticeship
- Review and revise your four-year plan during junior year course registration with career interest inventories and aptitude tests
- Meet with YA coordinators and/or instructors
- Apply for desired YA program for following year by deadline date
- Interview for position
- Accept position and sign Education/Training Agreement (ETA)
- Fulfill employment requirements after school year ends prior to beginning employment
- Maintain a passing GPA throughout the year
- Attend orientation session for new YA students
- Work with employer and YA coordinator to develop work schedule
- Revise 11th grade schedule with YA Coordinator, counselor, and parents to accommodate work and required classes
Eleventh Grade:
- Continue to participate in career exploration opportunities
- Begin YA program
- Participate in regularly scheduled evaluation meetings with instructor, coordinator, employer mentor, and parents
- Maintain a passing GPA in all courses
- Meet employer’s expectations as a productive employee
- Share concerns/questions with employer mentor, instructor, counselor, or YA coordinator
- Complete 12th grade registration
- Update your four-year plan
- Complete class schedule with work schedule to accommodate YA work for next year
- Ensure completion of high school graduation credit requirements
- Explore and begin to plan for post-secondary opportunities.
Twelfth Grade:
- Continue to participate in career exploration opportunities
- Continue to fulfill skill requirements in YA program
- Participate in regularly scheduled evaluation meetings with instructor, coordinator, employer mentor, and parents
- Maintain a passing GPA in all courses
- Meet employer’s expectations as a productive employee
- Finalize post-secondary plans
- Support and promote YA program to others
- Work with YA coordinator, instructor, employer mentor to complete skills checklist portfolio
- Obtain letter of recommendation from employer if leaving position after graduation
- Participate in year-end YA completion event and receive state certificate of proficiency
