Employer Planning Calendar
Suggested activities, responsibilities, and dates to help employers coordinate with their local YA Program.
September - March:
- First Time YA Employers:
- Approached by partnerships that offer YA programs
- Secure internal approval to provide program
- Identify possible mentors
- Develop YA student work schedule
- Provide training
- Coordinate worksite training with Related Technical classroom instruction as much as possible
- Meet regularly with student to discuss performance, schedules, and other jobs
- Keep track of progress using Skills Standards Checklist
- Participate in regular Progress Reviews with student, YA coordinator, school, and parents
- Provide guidance to YA student regarding post-secondary options
- Offer assistance to schools for recruitment of additional work sites
April - May:
- Interview new YA students according to locally developed process
- Conduct second interviews as needed
- Follow locally developed notification process for both successful and unsuccessful new YA applicants
- Sign Education/Training Agreement (ETA) (LINK form) with new YA students and the school
- Complete Skill Standards Checklists once student has completed skills
- Participate in recognition events
June - August:
- First Time YA Employers:
- Inform other employees about YA program, YA goals, training expectations, hours and responsibilities of YA student
- Start YA student working at mutually agreed upon time
- Orient new YA students to workplace; provide safety training; etc.
- Participate in mentor training
- Orient mentors to using Skill Standards Checklists
- Ensure ETA is on file
Ongoing:
- Participate in ongoing YA program evaluations
- Be aware of child labor laws and exemptions
- Participate in regularly scheduled mentor meetings
- Serve on Steering Committee, if possible
- Participate in planning activities for new YA programs
