Notice of Public Hearing
Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council
The Wisconsin Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council will hold a public hearing at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, the third in a series of hearings on the Wisconsin Unemployment Insurance Law. At the hearing Friday and those to follow, the public will have an opportunity to comment on the law and suggest improvements for the Council to consider in recommending changes to the Legislature. The public hearing will be held:

Issues the Council may address include: eligibility for unemployment benefit and who qualifies as an “employee” versus an “independent contractor,” benefit limits, programs for extended benefits, concerns of small employers and others such as seasonal and temporary employers, unemployment program funding, and the reporting quarterly wages and taxes electronically.
In recommending changes to the Legislature, the Council will consider changes to improve: fairness in outcomes for employers and employees, quality of the claims, tax and appeal processes, efficiency in administering the program, compliance and deterring unemployment fraud, and public understanding of the unemployment law.
The remaining public hearings will be held September 9 in Wausau and October 2 in Spooner. More information on the time and location of these hearings can be found on the DWD web site at dwd.wisconsin.gov/uibola/uiac/pubhearings/2008.htm. A public notice will be issued prior to each hearing.
