About the Bay Area WDA

The Bay Area  region is composed of 10 counties in Northeastern Wisconsin: Brown, Door, Florence, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Shawano, and Sheboygan. The region consists of two metropolitan statistical areas (MSA): Sheboygan MSA (Sheboygan County) and Green Bay MSA (Brown, Kewaunee, & Oconto Counties).

• The ten-county region has a combined land area of 6,597 square miles, twelve percent of Wisconsin’s total land area and a combined water area of 4,708 square miles, 42 percent of the statewide total water area.
   
• The Bay Area's population estimate for 2006 was 630,026, eleven percent of Wisconsin’s total population.
   
• The population density for the region is approximately 96 people per square mile.
   
• In 2006 the WDA’s labor force consisted of 346,249 participants (eleven percent of Wisconsin's labor force) with 329,562 employed.
   
• The annual unemployment rate for the region in 2006 was 4.8 percent, one-tenth of a percentage point higher than the statewide annual rate.
   
• The annual average number of jobs in the Bay Area was 310,860 in 2006. Manufacturing is the region's largest employment sector at approximately 24 percent of the total job base.
   
• The 2006 annual average wage paid by employers in the region was $34,783 or $2,047 less than the statewide annual average.
   
• The Bay Area's per capita personal income in 2005 was $31,937 or $1,341 less than Wisconsin.
   
• The Bay Area's total job base of 310,860 compared to Wisconsin’s total job base of 2,764,813 is distributed as follows:

In particular, the counties of Brown and Shawano encompass a large share of employment in the trade, transportation, & utilities sector; Door, Florence, and Menominee counties cater to the leisure & hospitality sector; Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oconto, and Sheboygan counties have a large manufacturing employment base.
