Painter

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Applies coats of primer, paint, sealer, stain, varnish, enamel, lacquer and special coatings to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of buildings and structures. Applies wallcovering both paper, vinyl and carpet to walls and ceilings.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Reads blueprints and work orders provided by owner or general contractor. Prepares all surfaces and substrates in preparation for coatings, including sanding, steel wooling and wire brushing of old paint surfaces to be repainted. Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with caulk, putty or spackle. Removes fixtures and switch plates with screwdriver from walls or ceilings. Tapes, masks and covers all furnishings, machinery etc. to protect from paint splatter or overspray. Blasts surfaces including structural steel, masonry, wood or concrete with abrasives prior to application of sealers or special coatings. Paints surfaces using brushes, rollers, mitt or spray gun. Applies stains to wood using brushes, rollers, mit or spray gun. Mixes paints, stains, and glazes using pigment, oil and solvents to match specific colors or effects. Simulates wood grain, marble or special effects with brushes, sponges, grainers and specialty tools. May wash walls prior to painting and wallpapering to insure proper adhesion of paints and fabrics. Abates lead paint by use of paint strippers, water blasting and scrapping insuring proper precautions due to hazardous materials and their recovery. May erect scaffolding and operate compressors for spraying and sandblasting.

Pavement Marking Operator

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Operates equipment normally mounted on a truck driven by a co-worker that is used to paint centerline, edgeline, fogline and other special markings on pavement, curbs and parking lots.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Starts compressor. Mixes paint with or without specialized thermoplastic additives. Pulls levers and pushes buttons to activate spraying cycle while personally observing surface to be painted or when signaled to do so by a co-worker. Cleans equipment after use.

Piledriver

CODE: 126

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Lays out, cuts, splices and drives wood, metal or concrete piling including sheet piling, I-beams, H-beams, pilecap and all welding to piling that is embedded into the ground for purposes of supporting a load or compacting soil.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Constructs all types of cofferdams and drives steel, wood and concrete piles into soil. Sets, drives, braces and anchors steel, concrete and wood sheet piling. Handles hydraulic jacks when used in the driving of piling. Bores, bolts, rods and anchors all docks. Cuts off piles, builds cribs and places same and makes all wood sheet piling. Performs the pointing and heading of all wood piles, the pulling of all piling of any type including wood sheet piling and all steel sheet piling. Places and sinks all caissons. Constructs all basic foundation supports such as augured in place piling, drilled caissons and cast-in-place piling. Places and removes all casings, permanent or temporary, required to install piling or caissons. Places and mans all pile testing equipment except those engineering instruments for measuring reactions. May place reinforcing and concrete as required to complete a piling or caisson.

Pipeline Fuser or Welder (Gas or Utility)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Installs, repairs, alters and reconditions gas distribution pipeline (both main line and service line) that is manufactured from iron, steel, aluminum, copper, brass or plastic, or any material substituted for such materials.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Cuts, bends, fits, threads, taps and aligns gas distribution pipeline. Makes joints by any method or means but primarily fusing and welding. Handles inside lineup clamps, bending mandrel and transitioning tools. Fabricates and installs metering station. Performs hydrostatic testing of pipe. Prepares pipe for joining and aligning.

Plasterer

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Applies coats of plaster to interior walls, ceilings and partitions of buildings and structures to produce finished surface according to blueprints, architect's drawings or oral instructions using hand and portable power tools. May install exterior insulation finish systems (EIFS).

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Directs workers to mix plaster to desired consistency. Spreads plaster over lath or masonry base using trowel. Smoothes plaster with darby and float to attain uniform thickness. Sprays fireproof insulation onto steel beams. Applies scratch, brown or finish coats of plaster to wood, metal or lath successively. Roughens undercoat with scratcher (wire or metal scraper) to provide bond for succeeding coats of plaster. Creates decorative textures in finish coat by marking surface of coat with brush and trowel or by spattering surface with pebbles. Molds and installs ornamental plaster panels and trim and casts ornamental plaster cornices and moldings by spreading freshly mixed plaster on table or in forms with trowel when molding and installing ornamental trim. Shapes plaster by hand, using template and cuts trim to size after plaster has hardened. Applies coat of plaster to wall and presses trim into position. Nails wooden strips to wall and ceiling to serve as guide for template when casting cornices or moldings. Applies plaster to wall or ceiling using trowel. Pushes template over plaster, striking off excess plaster, until desired shape and smoothness of molding is obtained. May perform task involved with application of exterior insulation finish systems (EIFS) including preparing substrate surface and protecting surfaces, both finished and substrate, from water and run off. Frees substrate and foam of foreign material and plane. Applies reinforcing mesh and fasten foam and detail with adhesive. Mixes coating and material with portable mixer and apply with trowel. Coats and sprays finish over base coat and detailing. May erect scaffolding which may be used for interior walls and ceiling, exterior drywall or EIFS work that may require special finishes or textures applied with hawk, trowel or special texture brushes. May mix mortar. May install precast ornamental plaster pieces by applying mortar to back of pieces and pressing pieces into place on wall or ceiling. May apply stucco using spray gun.

Plumber

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Installs and repairs domestic potable water lines, gravity waste disposal systems inside curb or fence lines, plumbing fixtures such as bathtubs, sinks and toilets and appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Studies blueprints and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installation. Inspects building or structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of building or structure resulting from installation of pipe. Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors using ruler, spirit level and plumb bob. Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings using hand and power tools. Cuts and threads pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe-threading machine. Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand. Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of metals such as iron, steel, copper, brass and lead and nonmetals such as glass, vitrified clay and plastic, using hand and power tools. Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent and caulk joints. Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers and water softeners. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains. Installs gas piping from lot line inward. May weld holding fixtures to steel structural members.
