State and Milwaukee County Leaders Meet Veterans, Employers at Free Employment and Supportive Services Event

MILWAUKEE – Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen today joined Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Secretary Daniel Zimmerman and Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele to meet local veterans and their spouses at a free employment and supportive services event at the Center for Veterans Issues (CVI).

Under Governor Walker's leadership, Wisconsin is investing $4.5 million to strengthen workforce and economic development opportunities in the city of Milwaukee, and that includes efforts to bring Wisconsin Job Service and other state and local services and resources to local neighborhoods and residents. As part of this outreach, DWD, CVI and Milwaukee County identified the need for a targeted, Milwaukee-based event for veterans and spouses of veterans who have significant barriers to employment.

"Wisconsin employers understand the value that veterans bring to the workforce, yet the transition from military to civilian life can be a significant adjustment for veterans with barriers to employment, like homelessness or a service-connected disability," said DWD Secretary Allen. "DWD coordinated this free event with the Center for Veterans Issues and Milwaukee County, triaging employment and supportive services to best serve veterans and their spouses."

WDVA Secretary Zimmerman added, "Employment takes care of the whole family. Anytime we can not only help veterans, but also the spouse, we are doing something that is meaningful to everyone."

In addition to traditional employment services, such as resume writing, career counseling, job search assistance, job placement and retention support and assistance with overcoming employment barriers, the event included a job fair and onsite interviews with employers that actively seek veterans to fill their job openings, such as Advanta Clean, Burlington Coat Factory, DWD, JDOG Junk Removal & Hauling, Potawatomi Hotel and Casino and Seek Careers and Staffing.

JDOG Owner and U.S. Army Veteran Andrew Weins said, "As a veteran-friendly employer, we are happy to participate in today's event. It provides us with a great opportunity to meet and interview veterans onsite."

Partners ensured that the following supportive services were available at the event to help veterans and their spouses successfully secure and maintain employment: childcare referrals, FoodShare Employment and Training enrollment, interview clothing support, on-the-job training referrals, transportation assistance and vocational rehabilitation. Eligibility and application assistance was also available for veterans benefits, including: education and healthcare benefits, emergency grants and pensions.
