DWD and UW Officials Gather Feedback from Area Employers During Internship Strategies Workshop at Concordia University
Major Milwaukee Employers provide valuable input that will help guide the Internship Coordination program implementation
MEQUON – Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Assistant Deputy Secretary Dave Anderson and officials from the UW System, Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU), joined area employers at Concordia University today for the sixth Workforce Alignment – Internship Strategies Workshop to highlight the state's Internship Coordination Program. The series of workshops is designed to solicit feedback from the private sector and share best practices for implementing and managing an Internship Program. The feedback that is received will help guide the implementation of Wisconsin's statewide Internship Coordination Program.
"Through the series of workshops, DWD has been able to gain valuable feedback from Wisconsin employers on how best to implement Wisconsin's new Internship Coordination Program," Assistant Deputy Secretary Dave Anderson said. "As demonstrated by today's turnout, the program is building momentum, and employers are recognizing that internships are a valuable component of any workforce development strategy. I would like to thank all of the businesses for attending today, and sharing your experiences with administering and the benefits of internship programs."
Governor Scott Walker signed Assembly Bill 742 into law in March 2016, creating the Internship Coordination Program. Under the parameters of the program, two full-time positions were established at DWD dedicated to connecting students with state businesses for internship opportunities and promoting internships as another potential solution to employer's demand for skilled talent. An additional component of the program is a statewide internship website that will connect Wisconsin students with employers who have available internships.
