DWD Receives $1.5 Million Grant to Expand Successful Apprenticeship Program
USDOL Secretary makes announcement at Madison College
MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen joined U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) Secretary Tom Perez at Madison College to highlight USDOL's announcement of a $1.5 million ApprenticeshipUSA Expansion Grant to Wisconsin to expand Registered Apprenticeship opportunities in the industries of Construction, Financial Services and Biotech.
Today's grant announcement builds on other recent grant awarded to Wisconsin such as the $5 million grant for the Wisconsin Apprenticeship Growth and Enhancement Strategies (WAGE$) project and the $200,000 awarded in July to expand Wisconsin apprenticeship and support apprenticeship activities as the program expands into new sectors of the economy.
"Under Governor Walker, Registered Apprenticeship has been made a top budget priority," Secretary Allen said. "Wisconsin's nationally recognized program enables employers to build a customized skills training system, immersing trainees in company culture while helping them earn good-paying, family supporting wages as they learn a skilled trade. We are proud that USDOL continues to recognize Wisconsin efforts in providing employers with proven talent development solutions."
Wisconsin's apprenticeship stewards have served as workforce development policy drivers and technical experts for more than 100 years, helping build and improve apprenticeship training at the state and national level. Currently, Wisconsin's Registered Apprenticeship program provides a value-added training model with broad industry engagement for as many as 11,000 new and continuing apprentices and up to 2,500 employers annually.
Efforts not only include continued expansion of RA into key sectors of the economy, but "bridging" Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship program with the Registered Apprenticeship program, allowing youth to transition into a family supporting career as an apprentice and eventually, a journyworker.
