Madison – Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today announced that Wisconsin's unemployment rate dropped to 4.5 percent in November, the lowest rate since December of 2001.
"Wisconsin's unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in nearly two years last month. Fewer people identified themselves as unemployed, than in any month since December 2001. While this is very positive news, we must continue to grow our economy to recover from the manufacturing job losses that we have experienced in the last three years," said Secretary Gassman.
The October rate was 4.6 percent and the November 2002 rate was 5.0 percent. The 136,958 people estimated to be unemployed in November was also the lowest figure since December of 2001.
The national unemployment rate for November was reported at 5.6 percent. In contrast to Wisconsin, the number of unemployed at the national level actually increased. Nationally, the slight increase in the number of unemployed was offset by a slight increase in the number of people employed.
The total number of jobs in the state, dropped from 2,804,300 in October to 2,799,800 in November. The leisure and hospitality industry and the construction industry accounted for most of that decrease - normal decrease in employment for these industries at this time of the year. Wisconsin's job market was more sluggish than expected given the generally positive news about the national economy. Manufacturing continues to see job losses, and is now down some 85,800 jobs from the November figure for 2000. The average monthly figure for the state will be about 515,700 for 2003, compared to 528,675 in 2002. Retail trade saw a smaller than normal increase between October and November, as employers remain very cautious about hiring new workers in spite of generally good economic news.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Wisconsin was estimated at 5.0 percent in November, down from the October rate of 5.4 percent and the November 2002 rate of 5.6 percent. The national seasonally adjusted rate was 5.9 percent in November.
November employment and unemployment figures for individual counties will be available December 23. This release also is available at www.dwd.state.wi.us/lmi/.
