Displaced Workers To Receive Assistance

Additional federal aid will help former Weyerhauser employees

Rothschild - Governor Jim Doyle and Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today announced that workers who lost their jobs at Weyerhauser in Rothschild, Wisconsin will receive additional assistance from the federal government because their job losses were a result of increased foreign competition. The U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration rewarded a request by DWD to assist the former employees of the company.

“We are grateful that the Department of Labor has agreed to assist these hard working residents, who were victims of poor economic conditions and stiff foreign competition,” said Governor Jim Doyle. “These individuals and their families need and deserve this assistance.”

DWD administers Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) statewide by offering a variety of benefits and reemployment services to assist unemployed workers to prepare for and obtain suitable employment. Workers may be eligible for training, job search and relocation allowances, income support and other reemployment services.

The Department of Labor determined that workers were eligible for assistance because increases of imports of articles like or directly competitive with products produced by these companies contributed to the total or partial separation of workers and to a decline in sales or production.

Affected workers can contact their local Job Center at (888) 258-9966 for more information.
