August Unemployment Announced

Madison – Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today announced that Wisconsin's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was estimated to be 5.9 percent in August, three-tenths of a percentage point higher than July's estimate and four-tenths higher than the August 2002 estimate. The national, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in August, which is one-tenth of a percentage point lower than July's and three-tenths higher than August 2002. Wisconsin's not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August dropped over the month one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.4 percent.

"We are happy to report good news for Wisconsin’s labor market in August with a healthy boost last month in the hard-hit manufacturing sector, where employment increased by 2,100, and improvement in wholesale and retail trade with an additional 1,900 jobs in August," Gassman said.

Wisconsin's nonfarm wage and salary industry employment figures showed a net monthly decrease in the number of jobs, a decrease of 5,400 jobs. The bulk of the monthly job decrease was centered in local government employment, which showed a decrease of 6,600 jobs. Accommodation and food services showed a loss of 2,300 jobs. Offsetting these losses were gains in both durable and nondurable goods manufacturing employment, by 900 and 1,200 jobs, respectively. Retail trade showed a healthy gain of 1,500 jobs over the month and wholesale trade also improved by 400 jobs since July. Arts, entertainment and recreation showed a large monthly gain of 1,200 jobs.

An annual perspective shows that Wisconsin has 1,000 more jobs than it had in August 2002. Services producing industries grew by 24,400 jobs since August 2002, which was offset by losses of 23,400 jobs in goods producing industries. Manufacturing employment and construction employment show decreases of 15,200 and 8,500 jobs, respectively, annually. Total government employment shows a decrease of 4,600 jobs annually. Services industries financial activities, professional and business services, and educational and health services show a combined 17,800 new jobs compared to August 2002.

August employment and unemployment figures for individual counties will be available September 24.
