JULY LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATES ANNOUNCED

Madison – Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today announced that 62 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties and 22 of its 28 largest cities saw decreases in unemployment in July. Three counties and two cities saw no change in rate last month.

"The latest labor market information, coupled with recent positive economic reports on the national level, is encouraging news for Wisconsin workers," Gassman said. "With the majority of the counties and a majority of the state’s largest cities reporting a decrease in unemployment, we have another good round of labor market news for the state," Gassman said.

Wisconsin’s statewide unemployment rate for July of 2003 was up 0.2 percent points from the July 2002 rate and there were 50 counties in the state where unemployment rates were higher in July of 2003 than they were in 2002. Twenty counties had lower rates and two counties Jackson and Walworth were unchanged at 3.7 percent and 4.3 percent respectively.

Dane County had the lowest rate for the month at 2.9 percent. Adams, Burnett, Iowa, Jackson, La Crosse, and Sauk counties had unemployment rates lower that 4.0 percent. The highest county rate was reported for Menominee County, which had a 12.9 percent rate. Oconto at 9.4 percent and Rock at 8.8 percent were next in order. Milwaukee County had an 8.2 percent rate, and Racine County had an 8.2 percent rate.

Manufacturing continues to struggle throughout the state, particularly in the durable goods sectors in the southeastern party of the state and the paper industry in northeastern Wisconsin.

The state rate was down 0.2 percentage points from June. Wisconsin normally sees lower unemployment rates in the July through November period, as many of the state’s manufacturers feel some seasonal increases in production efforts, and the agricultural and tourism industries feel increases as well.
