JUNE LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATES ANNOUNCED

Madison – Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today announced sixty-six of Wisconsin’s seventy-two counties experienced higher unemployment rates in June than they had experienced in May, while six counties saw lower rates.

"This is not an unusual occurrence, as June unemployment rates normally reflect a larger number of job seekers associated with a large influx of young people recently finishing the school session and out looking for jobs," Secretary Gassman said.

Door, Iowa, Iron, Lincoln, Vilas and Waupaca counties all experienced decreases in unemployment over the month.

Forty-seven counties had higher rates in 2003 than they had experienced in 2002 - another indicator of the lag in hiring in the labor markets despite recent announcements that the nation’s recession ended in November of 2001.

The counties with the lowest June unemployment rates were Dane at 3.0 percent, Iowa at 3.6 percent, Sauk at 3.8 percent and Jackson at 3.9 percent. Ten counties in the state had unemployment rates of 8.0 percent or higher, led by Menominee at 14.8 percent, Oconto at 10.0 percent, Polk at 9.1 percent, and Juneau at 9.0 percent.

Claims for unemployment insurance continue to be high throughout the state. For the past several weeks, they have been higher than they were last year at this time, although they are down somewhat from 2001.

Wisconsin’s manufacturing industry continues to be flat, particularly the durable goods manufacturing industry. The wholesale trade industry has seen improved employment figures throughout the state. This is normally a good sign as wholesale trade is often a leading indicator.
