Madison - Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Secretary Roberta Gassman today announced that Wisconsin’s unadjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent in May from 5.8 percent in April, as the state added more than 32,000 jobs over the month including 1,300 manufacturing jobs.
"This latest employment data is encouraging news for Wisconsin workers and the addition of manufacturing jobs is particularly encouraging for Wisconsin, as jobs in that industry have not shown an increase in nine months," Secretary Gassman said.
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May was estimated at 5.4 percent, unchanged from the state’s April figure. The seasonally adjusted rate was unchanged while the unadjusted rate fell because job growth experienced in the state was normal for this time of year, as seasonal employment picks up during the late spring and summer months.
The national adjusted rate was estimated to be 6.1 percent for May, up from 6.0 percent in April. One year ago, the state rate was 5.3 percent and the national rate was 5.8 percent. The unadjusted rate for Wisconsin for May was 5.1 percent, compared to 5.8 percent in April and 5.0 percent in May of 2002. The national unadjusted rate was 5.8 percent for May.
The total number of non-farm wage and salary jobs for the state in May was estimated to be 2,799,500, which is an increase of 32,100 jobs over the April figure of 2,767,400. The gain in jobs was led by an increase of 12,300 jobs in leisure & hospitality followed by a combined gain of 6,600 jobs in retail and wholesale trade.
Manufacturing employment gained 1,300 jobs in May with the majority of the monthly gain in non-durable goods manufacturing employment. A monthly increase in manufacturing employment is typical in May and this is the first month of 2003 to see a monthly increase in this industry's employment. This is the first month since August 2002 to show an increase in manufacturing employment.
Employment in educational services and state and local government showed the most significant decreases of 800, 1,200 and 2,100 jobs, respectively, as these are tied to the end of the academic year.
May employment and unemployment figures for individual counties will be available June 25. This release also is available at www.dwd.state.wi.us/lmi.
