DISPLACED WORKERS TO RECEIVE ASSISTANCE
Additional aid will help former
National Presto Industrial, Inc. employees
Madison – Governor Jim Doyle and the Department of Workforce
Development today announced that workers who lost their jobs at National
Presto Industrial, Inc. in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, will receive additional
assistance from the federal government because their job losses were a
result of increased foreign competition. The U.S. Department of Labor,
Employment and Training Administration, rewarded a request by DWD to
assist the former employees of the company.
"We are grateful that the Department of Labor has agreed to assist
these hard working Wisconsin residents, who were victims of poor economic
conditions and stiff foreign competition. These individuals and their
families need and deserve this assistance," said Governor Jim Doyle.
The Department of Workforce Development made the requests on behalf of
the affected workers on March 3, 2003 for workers at National Presto
Industrial, Inc., the headquarters for, and parent company of National
Presto Manufacturing, Inc. Workers who suffered employment loss on or
after February 24, 2002 through February 24, 2004 from National Presto
Industrial are eligible to apply for assistance under Section 223 of the
Trade act of 1974, as amended.
The Department of Labor determined that workers were eligible for
assistance because increases of imports of articles like or directly
competitive with products produced by these companies contributed to the
total or partial separation of workers and to a decline in sales or
production.
Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) offers a variety of benefits and
reemployment services to assist unemployed workers prepare for and obtain
suitable employment. Workers may be eligible for training, job search and
relocation allowances, income support and other reemployment services.
