DECEMBER LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED
MADISON – Five
counties in the state -- Iron, Menominee, Milwaukee, Ozaukee and
Winnebago – experienced lower unemployment rates in December than they
had experienced in November. Twelve counties had lower rates in December
of 2002 than they had reported in 2001, while two counties were
unchanged according to information released today by the Department of
Workforce Development (DWD).
"The southeastern
part of the state continues to experience a particularly difficult labor
market, while the northern half of the state is experiencing the normal
seasonal adjustment for this time of year," said newly appointed
DWD Secretary Gassman. "Currently DWD labor analysts are carefully
watching the employment rates because the lack of snow may be
detrimental for the rates in the near future."
Thirty-three of the
state’s 72 counties reported a preliminary December unemployment rate
of 6.0 percent or higher. Menominee County had the state’s highest
unemployment rate at 10.4 percent followed by Florence County at 9.6
percent and Juneau County at 9.1 percent. Seven counties in the state
had unemployment rates of 4.0 percent or lower. Dane County had the
state’s lowest rate at 2.4 percent, followed by Iowa and Ozaukee
counties at 3.4 percent.
Five counties ended the
year with average annual rates at 4.0 percent or lower, with Dane County
leading the way at 2.6 percent. Counties with the highest annual
unemployment rates were Menominee at 12.1 percent, Juneau at 9.7
percent, Ashland at 8.8 percent, and Florence at 8.3 percent.
Most of Wisconsin has
shared in the very sluggish labor market during 2002, although in
general, the southwestern counties, the south central counties and the
Fox Valley counties fared better than elsewhere. The harder hit areas of
the state included much of southeastern Wisconsin, particularly Racine
and Milwaukee counties.
Many of the northern
counties of the state also saw increases in unemployment with much of
the increase likely tied to the difficulties that have been experienced
in winter recreation. The continued sluggishness in the manufacturing
section is also evident in the areas of the state most affected by
rising unemployment.
