JULY LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON – Sixty-seven of Wisconsin’s seventy-two counties saw some decrease in their July unemployment rates, while five counties experienced an increase and one remained unchanged from June in figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development. Thirty-four counties had lower rates in July of 2002 than they had recorded in July of 2001.

"County and local employment figures for July reflect the improvement in Wisconsin’s labor force experienced on the statewide level for the month," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Alexander.

Twenty of Wisconsin’s counties had an unemployment rate below 4.0 percent in July, and three of those had rates below 3.0 percent. The lowest rate was reported in Dane County at 2.5 percent followed by Vilas County at 2.7 percent and Sauk County at 2.9 percent. The states’ highest rate was experienced in Menominee County with a 13.1 percent unemployment rate, down from 14.9 percent in June. Rock County was next at 8.0 percent followed by Juneau County at 7.7 percent.

Of the state’s 28 largest municipalities, Madison had the lowest rate in July at 2.9 percent, followed by Menomonee Falls at 3.0 percent and Greenfield at 3.5 percent. The highest was recorded in Racine at 11.0 percent, followed by Beloit at 10.7 percent and Janesville at 9.5 percent. Twenty-five areas experienced a decrease and three had an increase in rate in July.

Although some improvement was seen in several counties with strong durable goods manufacturing, such as Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan counties, many of the state’s durable goods manufacturing areas, notably Milwaukee, Racine and Beloit, continued to experience higher levels of unemployment.

Nevertheless, durable goods manufacturing employment appears to have leveled off after very poor performance for the past eighteen months. The July figure statewide was 339,700 compared to 341,900 in June a reduction of 2,200 jobs. The norm for this time of the year is a reduction of about 3,500 jobs.

Areas of the state most heavily involved in tourism experienced low unemployment rates. In addition to Vilas and Sauk counties mentioned above, Door County - 3.0%, Jackson County - 3.2%, Sawyer County – 4.0%, Taylor County - 3.4% and Walworth County - 3.7%, all experienced unemployment rates of 4.0 percent or lower.
