MADISON – Gov. Scott McCallum announced today that 64 local government organizations, including city and county governments, schools districts, technical colleges and tribes, will share $17.2 million in grants to help improve the quality and availability of child care.
"In the past, these grants have been hugely successful in making much-needed child care accessible to families all over Wisconsin," Gov. McCallum said. "With these latest grants, we renew our commitment to the hard-working families of this state by helping local agencies expand and enhance child care services."
Twenty-five of the grants are being awarded to collaborative applicants who represent an additional 86 partner agencies. These partnerships help expand child care services to more working families in virtually all Wisconsin counties. Funding for these grants, which begins Oct. 1, comes from the Federal Child Care and Development Block Grant.
Previous grants have provided service enhancements, including child care provider training, new child care program start-up costs, and other grants and stipends for curriculum upgrades within child care facilities. Child care providers also have used grant funds to expand services for children with disabilities, enhance parent education and referral services, improve health and safety strategies for child care centers, and implement a variety of teacher retention strategies.
The grant recipients are:
