MAY LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON – Each of Wisconsin’s seventy-two counties and all 28 largest cities saw improvement in their May unemployment rates in figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development.

Most counties had significant improvements in May, with 64 counties recording drops of one percent or more. Twenty of which had rates fall 2 percent or more while 14 saw rates fall 3 percent or more. Thirty-one counties recorded rates equal to or less than May of 2001.

"Although improvement of a seasonal nature is normal at this time of year, to feel that positive effect across the entire state is rather remarkable," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert. "With significant improvements over the last two months in the state’s labor market, many counties are at or better than they were year ago, which is great news for Wisconsin workers and their families," she said.

The state’s 1.2 percentage point drop in the unemployment rate is considerably stronger than the normal seasonal experience over the past decade. The norm has been a 0.4 percentage point decrease.

Twenty-one of Wisconsin’s counties had an unemployment rate below 4.0 percent in May. The lowest rate was reported in Dane County at 2.2 percent followed by Iowa County at 2.9 percent and Sauk County at 3.2 percent. Dunn and Ozaukee counties were both reported at 3.4 percent. The states’ highest rate was experienced in Menominee County with a 10.9 percent unemployment rate. Juneau County was next at 8.5 percent followed by Ashland County at 8.1 percent. Each of these three counties experienced considerable improvement over their April rates. Menominee County dropped from 14.0 in April to 10.9 percent in May, Ashland dropped from 11.8 percent in April to 8.1 percent in May, and Juneau dropped from 11.8 percent in April to 8.5 percent in May.

Perhaps the most impressive improvement was experienced in Southeastern Wisconsin where many of the state’s largest cities and counties are located. The Kenosha MSA saw its seasonally adjusted rate drop from 5.6 percent to 5.0 percent. The Milwaukee MSA dropped from 5.7 percent to 5.1 percent. The Racine MSA dropped from 7.2 percent to 6.6 percent and the Sheboygan MSA dropped from 5.2 percent to 4.2 percent.
