Wednesday, January 23, 2002 Governor Scott McCallum Secretary Jennifer Reinert | News Media Contact Christopher Marschman 608/261-6705 e-mail: news@dwd.state.wi.us fax: 608/266-1784 | Contact: Terry Ludeman, 608/267-3262 DECEMBER LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED MADISON – Dane County, with an estimated 2.0 percent unemployment rate, was lowest in the state followed by Ozaukee County at 2.9 percent and Iowa County and Waukesha County at 3.0 percent according to figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD). Twenty-three counties had December rates estimated at less than 4.0 percent. "Twenty-five of Wisconsin’s seventy-two counties experienced a slight decrease in unemployment rates between November and December, while thirty-seven experienced increases and ten remained unchanged from their November figure," said DWD Secretary Reinert. Wisconsin’s highest county unemployment rate in December was estimated for Menominee County where a rate of 10.7 percent was estimated. Menominee County was followed by Juneau County at 8.5 percent and Oconto County at 7.6 percent. Racine had the highest city rate at 9.2 percent, followed by Beloit at 7.4 percent. Twenty-three counties had a 5.5 percent or higher unemployment rate for December. Nineteen of those counties are located in the northern half of the state, where seasonal fluctuations are most prevalent. No Wisconsin counties had a lower unemployment rate in December of 2001 than they had in December of 2000, although Florence County and Wood County had the same rates as they had had in 2000. Counties with a high concentration of employment in manufacturing were also more likely to have fairly high unemployment levels. The food and kindred products manufacturing industry registered a loss of 700 jobs statewide between November and December, a normal seasonal fluctuation. The transportation equipment manufacturing industry also reported a reduction of 500 jobs statewide, with most of those, 400, attributed to Kenosha County. The state’s unemployment rate for December was estimated at 4.2 percent, little changed from the 4.3 percent estimated for November. Wisconsin’s November and December’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rates were estimated to be 4.7 percent.
