NOVEMBER LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON –Sixty-eight of Wisconsin’s 72 counties shared in the increase in the State’s November unemployment rate, which went from 3.9 percent in October to 4.3 percent in November (4.0 percent to 4.5 percent when seasonally adjusted), according to figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

"Many of the counties with the largest increases in unemployment were in the northern tier of the state where great seasonal swings in unemployment occur," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert. The counties with the greatest increase in unemployment rates were Ashland, Bayfield, Iron, Vilas and Door. Iron County, with a 3.4 percent jump, had the greatest increase. Dodge, Kenosha and Monroe counties experienced improvement, while Racine County saw no change.

The state’s lowest unemployment rate was reported for Dane County at 1.9 percent. Iowa County had the second lowest rate at 2.7 percent. Those were the only county unemployment rates estimated at less than 3.0 percent for Wisconsin for November. The highest rate was reported for Menominee County at 11.1 percent, followed by Juneau County at 8.4 percent and Iron County at 7.6 percent.

Manufacturing lost 5,400 jobs between October and November. Of that total, 2,800 were in the non-durable goods manufacturing industries, with food and kindred products manufacturing being the hardest hit. A majority of those non-durable jobs that were lost were in non-metropolitan counties around the state.

The City of Racine had an estimated 10.0 percent of its workforce unemployed in November, while the City of Beloit reported an 8.4 percent rate. Racine’s rate was unchanged from October, while Beloit’s rate was actually down one-tenth of a percentage point.

For the first 50 weeks of 2001, 48.5 percent of all initial claims were in manufacturing. During the past three weeks, including the week ending December 15, only 36.2 percent were in manufacturing. Meanwhile, total initial claims, which had been averaging 44 percent higher than 2000 levels, were actually lower for the weeks ending December 15, and December 22. For the week ending December 29, which includes Christmas - normally the busiest time of the year, preliminary figures show claims are about 35 percent higher than last year levels for the same week.
