SEPTEMBER LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON – Wisconsin’s statewide unadjusted unemployment rate for the month of September dropped from 4.0 percent to 3.4 percent, while the state’s seasonally adjusted rate fell to 4.0 percent in September, as announced last week. Sixty-eight counties had lower rates reported for September than for August, while only two, Rock County and Vilas County, saw higher rates.

"Though concerns remain over the national slowdown in manufacturing and the effects of September 11, we are encouraged by the fact that Wisconsin continues to experience relatively low unemployment and overall job growth," DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert said.

Thirty-four of Wisconsin’s seventy-two counties had unemployment rates of 3.0 percent or lower for September, in estimates released by the Department of Workforce Development. Nine of those were 2.5 percent or lower. Twenty-four of the state’s counties had unemployment rates higher than the Wisconsin’s estimated 3.4 percent. The highest rate in the state was experienced in Menominee County, where the September rate was estimated at 9.2 percent. The next highest was found in Juneau County, where the rate was estimated to be 7.0 percent. Dane County had the State’s lowest rate at 1.6 percent, with Pierce County close behind at 1.8 percent. Surprisingly, twenty-two counties in the State had lower rates than one year ago.

Manufacturing continues to be Wisconsin’s weak industrial sector, having lost some 27,000 jobs since last year’s September figure. Consequently, the areas where residents are most likely to be employed in the manufacturing sector, particularly the machinery manufacturing industries, are the areas with the highest unemployment rates. These areas include Dodge County, Racine County, Milwaukee County and Rock County. Cities most affected include Beloit, Janesville, Milwaukee and Racine with estimated rates of 7.7 percent, 5.9 percent, 6.9 percent and 9.2 percent respectively.

In September, there were 2,857,000 jobs reported in Wisconsin’s nonfarm wage and salary economy. One year ago there were 2,856,000. The average monthly job total for January 2001 through September 2001 has been 2,835,433, while for the same period in 2000, that figure was 2,823,330, an increase of 12,103 over that period.
