AUGUST LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON – Wisconsin’s statewide unadjusted unemployment rate for the month of August dropped from 4.4 percent to 3.9 percent as announced last week. Figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development show that 61 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties reported decreases in unemployment rates, while 8 saw their rates increase, and three were unchanged.

"While most Wisconsin counties experienced some improvement in their unemployment rate in August, the manufacturing sector continued to struggle as did employment overall last month," DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert said. "We are continuing to monitor Wisconsin’s situation closely as sluggishness in manufacturing is still a concern and economic fallout from the September 11 attack on the United States remains to be seen," she said.

The greatest decrease was for Menominee County where the rate dropped from 15.2 percent in July to 10.9 percent in August, and for Rock County, where the rate dropped from 8.5 percent in July to 4.8 percent in August. Menominee County had the state’s highest rate at 10.9 percent, followed by Juneau County at 7.6 percent and Racine County at 6.7 percent. The greatest increase was in Monroe County where the unemployment rate went from 4.4 percent in July to 6.6 percent in August. The lowest unemployment rate in the state was Dane County, where the August rate was estimated at 1.8 percent. Next was Vilas County where a 2.1 percent unemployment rate was estimated for August.

Many of the counties closely associated with tourism had very low unemployment rates in August, including Vilas County at 2.1 percent, Sauk County at 2.5 percent, Door County at 2.8 percent, Bayfield County at 3.5 percent, Barron County at 3.3 percent. The suburban metropolitan statistical area counties generally reported very low rates as well, with Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee, Pierce, and St. Croix counties all well below 3.4 percent. Seven counties in the state had unemployment rates below 3.0 percent.

Manufacturing continued to show very weak figures throughout much of the state. There were 1,700 fewer manufacturing jobs in August in the state than there had been in July. Most metropolitan statistical areas in the state, except for the Wausau area, shared in the loss, with the Milwaukee metro area being particularly hard-hit. The Milwaukee metro area lost 900 manufacturing jobs, while the Wausau area added 700 manufacturing jobs in August.
