GOVERNOR PRESENTS SEPTEMBER WIN AWARDMADISON—Gov. Scott McCallum today announced that Milwaukee area based AbilITy Connection has won the September Governor’s Workforce Innovation Award (WIN), which recognizes individuals and organizations that create innovative approaches and outside-of-the-box solutions to develop and sustain Wisconsin’s workforce. "AbilITy Connection employers donate their time and expertise to building a stronger skilled workforce in Wisconsin," Gov. McCallum said. "Their efforts give consumers the benefit of learning a skill and employers the benefit of a skilled workforce." In addition to mentoring, AbilITy Connection employers serve as members of the groups Advisory Council, assist the participants in development of an IT career, and contribute space for forum meetings where alumni of the program can share success stories. Through the AbilITy Connection program at Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin and Metropolitan Chicago, a DVR consumer with an IT employment goal, is matched with a mentor in one of the participating companies. With the help of the mentor, they explore internships, career development and make important contacts that help them find employment after they graduate/complete their training. The program has been very successful for both consumers and for the employers. Consumers benefit from the knowledge and "connections" that their mentors have. Employers benefit by gaining access to a group of IT graduates to meet their company’s IT needs. The award will be presented to AbilITy Connection employers at a September 19, 2001 reception at the Milwaukee Athletic Club in Milwaukee. The program will begin at 4:00 p.m. The WIN Award is presented each month to highlight innovative approaches and solutions to overcoming barriers to work, empowering individuals to move up the job ladder, and partnering with employers, educators and local government to do what works to build a stronger workforce. ### | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
