JUNE LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON – Nine of Wisconsin’s 72 counties saw improvement in their unemployment rate between May and June, while four experienced no change, and 59 experienced some increase in unemployment rate last month, according to statistics released today by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

"It is customary for Wisconsin to have an increase in unemployment rates between May and June, as more job seekers move into the labor market in search of summer jobs," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert. "Since it takes some time for job seekers to settle into jobs, there is a short time when the labor force increases more rapidly than employment and thus the unemployment rate rises," Reinert explained.

Each year, students, teachers, homemakers, and even retirees returning home from warmer climates look for jobs as the summer season begins in earnest.

Nineteen of Wisconsin’s 72 counties had unemployment rates under 4.0 percent, with Dane County’s 1.9 percent rate leading the way. Sauk County at 2.9 percent had the next lowest figure for June. Last year, there were 32 counties with unemployment rates under 4.0 percent in June. There were 29 counties with unemployment rates over 5.0 percent, compared to 22 one year ago. Menominee County, with a 15.5 percent unemployment rate, had the state’s highest unemployment rate in June. Juneau County had the next highest rate at 8.6 percent.

Ten counties in Wisconsin saw their employment levels drop between May and June, while 62 counties saw employment levels increase. A number of the ten counties where employment levels decreased are homes to state universities. The employment connected to those universities generally decreases substantially in June. Those include Dunn County, Eau Claire County, Grant County, and La Crosse County. Counties adjacent to those state university counties, such as Lafayette and Chippewa counties are also affected.

As durable goods manufacturing remains very flat for the state, counties where many residents work in durable goods manufacturing continue to see higher unemployment rates than we’ve become accustomed to. These include Milwaukee County, Racine County, Rock County, and Manitowoc County. Particularly hard hit were the cities of Beloit, Manitowoc, Milwaukee and Racine. The City of Racine’s unemployment rate was estimated to be 10.8 percent for June.
