JUNE UNEMPLOYMENT RATES RELEASED

MADISON – The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) today announced the state’s preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for the month of June was 4.3 percent, which is up from 4.1 percent for the month of May. The national seasonally adjusted rate for June was 4.5 percent.

"Labor market figures for the month of June in Wisconsin are not exhilarating, but the slight increase in durable goods manufacturing, after six straight months of decreases in that market, is positive," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert.

The number of jobs in Wisconsin’s nonfarm wage and salary economy was reported to be 2,886,300 for June. This was a slight increase from one year ago, when the jobs in the nonfarm wage and salary economy were reported to be 2,884,100. It also represented a small increase from the May figure of 2,857,200.

The durable goods manufacturing industry continues to be flat for the state, though there were some signs of resilience in durable goods manufacturing. After six straight months of decreases, there was a slight increase of employment in durable goods manufacturing, with 361,500 jobs in June compared to 360,100 jobs in May. This was less of an increase than normal for this time of the year, but a change in direction, nevertheless. The non-durable goods manufacturing industry was disappointing, as employment increased by only 2,100 jobs compared to a more normal 6,500 increase this time of the year.

Construction continued to have positive employment figures, as did the very large service industry. Retail trade was flatter than normal, and wholesale trade was down, seasonally. Finance, insurance and real estate employment was very strong, as was transportation, communications and utilities.

Note to news media

County employment and unemployment figures for June should be available on July 25. This release and other labor market information is available on the department Internet site at: http://www.dwd.state.wi.us/lmi
