DECEMBER LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT DATA RELEASED

MADISON – Wisconsin local area unemployment rates for December indicate changes over the month and year that edged upward, but still remain very low according to figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

"The December Wisconsin unemployment rate increase from 3.0 to 3.3 percent, released last week, is reflected in the area rates being released today," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert. "As with the state rate, most county and city rates also edged upward, but most increases were moderate in size," she said.

All 11 state metropolitan areas had seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increases in the November to December period. Over-the-year comparisons indicate nine metropolitan areas had unemployment rate increases and two areas (La Crosse and Janesville-Beloit) had reductions in the rate.

County and city unemployment rate changes (not seasonally adjusted) reflected the normal seasonal increase for this time of the year. In addition, some counties also reflected an impact from the Federal Reserve Bank efforts to slow the rate of economic growth with larger than seasonal increases in unemployment.
