STATE ASSISTING TOWER AUTOMOTIVE WORKERS

MADISON – The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Rapid Response Team, in cooperation with the Milwaukee HIRE Center and the Private Industry Council of Milwaukee County, has set up orientation sessions for Tower Automotive employees who will be affected by permanent layoffs in December, Secretary Jennifer Reinert announced today.

"It is unfortunate anytime employees are faced with a layoff or plant closing situations," Secretary Reinert said. "But when they do happen, we are glad that we are able to step in and provide information and services to help affected individuals and their families make the transition to new, suitable employment."

The orientations will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at 10:00 A.M and 1:00 P.M. The orientations will be held at the D.A.L.U. Smith Steelworkers Hall, 3651 North 27th Street in Milwaukee.

At the orientation, which will be held on company time, employees will receive information on unemployment, training and re-training options, job service and other forms of available assistance.

On October 19, 2000, The Department was informed of the company’s intention to permanently lay-off 323 employees. The company informed DWD that the layoffs, baring any unforeseen business factors, would begin December 22, 2000.
