Wednesday, September 20, 2000 Governor Tommy G. Thompson Secretary Jennifer Reinert | News Media Contact Christopher Marschman 608/261-6705 e-mail: news@dwd.state.wi.us fax: 608/266-1784 | Contact: August Cibarich, 608/266-0522 AUGUST LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT DATA RELEASED MADISONFifty Wisconsin counties had unemployment rates at or below 4.0 percent in the month of August and only seven had rates of 5.0 percent or more for the month, according to statistics released today by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. Of the states 72 counties, 29 had unemployment rates below 3 percent, 20 had rates above 4 percent, and one had a rate of more than 7 percent. The county with the lowest July unemployment rate was Dane at 1.5 percent. Ten cities had rates below 3 percent, while eight were above 4 percent, and two had rates at or above 7 percent. The City of Madison had the lowest rate for cities at 1.8 percent. Of the states 11 metropolitan areas, nine experienced declines in the unemployment rate, one did not change and one, La Crosse, increased by only a tenth of a percentage point. Unemployment for the state declined by two tenths of a percentage point seasonally adjusted as the number of unemployed dropped by more than 4,000 over the month. Meanwhile, officials said employment declined by less than it normally does in August with the adjusted figure increasing by 6,000 to 2,922,700. "Wisconsin continues to experience low unemployment combined with labor market and employment growth, all indications of a strong and healthy economy," Secretary Reinert said.
