JULY LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT DATA RELEASED

MADISON—Forty-nine Wisconsin counties had unemployment rates at or below 4.0 percent in the month of July, according to statistics released today by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

Of the state’s 72 counties, 21 had unemployment rates below 3.0 percent, 23 had rates above 4.0 percent, and 2 had rates of 7.0 or above. The county with the lowest June unemployment rate was Dane at 1.7 percent. Eight cities had rates below 3.0 percent, fourteen were above 4.0 percent, and five had rates at or above 7.0 percent. The City of Madison had the lowest rate for cities at 2.0 percent.

Unemployment for the state remained at 3.7 percent in July as a result of the large labor force. State labor market analysts said the large seasonal labor force level was much greater than normal this year resulting in significant increases in local area unemployment rates. The higher level of unemployment remained despite normal or greater than normal employment gains.

"Employment statistics indicate that Wisconsin continues to have one of the largest percentage gains of any of the 50 states in its over-the-year labor force gain," said DWD Secretary Linda Stewart. "This is encouraging news for the thousands of employers across the state who have struggled to find qualified workers in recent years."

The number of people employed in Wisconsin increased 6,300, but when seasonally-adjusted, total employment was almost unchanged in July. State labor analysts said that July’s small decline in number of people seeking work, and virtually unchanged employment over the last two months were responsible for July’s unchanged unemployment rate.

This release and other labor market information is available on the department Internet site at: http://www.dwd.state.wi.us/dwelmi
