Tuesday, July 25, 2000 Governor Tommy G. Thompson Secretary Linda Stewart | News Media Contact Christopher Marschman 608/261-6705 e-mail: news@dwd.state.wi.us fax: 608/266-1784 | JUNE COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT DATA RELEASED MADISONWisconsin set a record for number of jobs in the month of June and had a record number of job holders and job seekers according to statistics from the Department of Workforce Development. According to information released last week by the DWD, the number of seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs in the state increased by 11,700 in June to a record high of 2,825,300. Meanwhile, the states seasonally-adjusted labor force level for June reached an all-time high of 3,027,200. Unemployment for the state increased 0.4 percent in June to 3.7 percent as a result of a larger labor force. State labor market analysts said the large seasonal increase in labor force was much greater than normal this year resulting in significant increases in local area unemployment rates. The above normal rise in unemployment occurred despite normal or greater than normal employment and job gains. State analysts said the over-the-year labor force gain in Wisconsin is the largest percentage gain of any of the 50 states. Of the states 72 counties, twelve had unemployment rates below 3.0 percent, thirty had rates above 4.0 percent, and four had rates of 7.0 or above. The county with the lowest June unemployment rate was Dane at 1.9 percent. Seven cities had rates below 3.0 percent, sixteen were above 4.0 percent, and seven had rates at or above 7.0 percent. The City of Madison had the lowest rate for cities at 2.2 percent. "What we are seeing in most areas of the state where unemployment has gone up recently is a rise in unemployment caused by additional people entering the labor force as opposed to a rise in unemployment from a lack of jobs," DWD Secretary Linda Stewart said. The number of people employed increased 61,000, but when seasonally-adjusted, total employment remained virtually unchanged in June. State labor analysts said that the rise in people seeking work combined with the virtually unchanged employment numbers resulted in the 0.4 percentage point increase in unemployment.
