JUNE UNEMPLOYMENT RATES RELEASED
Nonfarm jobs at record high

MADISON—The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) today announced the state’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate rose .4 percent in June to 3.7 percent. That compares to 3.3 percent in May and 3.0 percent last year at this time.

"This number is somewhat deceiving though," said DWD Secretary Linda Stewart. "While unemployment is up, so is the number of available workers, so it’s not as serious an increase as it would seem on the surface."

The number of seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs in the state increased by 11,700 in June to a record high of 2,825,300. Five industry groups, service; trade; government; transportation; communication and public utilities; and finance, insurance and real estate, all set all-time record highs for total number of jobs.

"We are pleased to see the number of people entering the workforce is on the rise as Wisconsin is creating a record number of jobs and employers struggle to find workers," Stewart said.

The June seasonally-adjusted Wisconsin labor force level is 3,027,200, an all-time high. The number of people employed increased 61,000, but when seasonally-adjusted, total employment remained virtually unchanged in June. State labor analysts said that the rise in people seeking work combined with the virtually unchanged employment numbers resulted in the .4 percent increase in unemployment.

"We have a record number of jobs in Wisconsin and a record number of people eager to fill them. And Wisconsin continues to out-pace the rest of the nation in its workforce participation and jobs creation," Stewart said.

Wisconsin employs 70 percent of its 16 and over population in nonfarm jobs. This compares to a national rate of 63 percent. Since 1988, Wisconsin nonfarm jobs have increased by 30 percent while the rest of the nation increased 25 percent.

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate has been lower than the national rate for 149 consecutive months.

County employment and unemployment figures for June should be available by July 25.  Labor market information is available on the department Internet site at: http://www.dwd.state.wi.us/dwelmi
